内容紹介

アメリカからパリに着いたチャールズ・ウィルスは、カフェ・ディンゴへ行き、壁に描かれた女の絵を見て、それにまつわる記憶を甦らせる。1954年5月8日、パリは第二次大戦集結に湧いていた。シャンゼリゼを埋める群集歓喜のなかで当時中尉だったチャールズは、いきなり見知らぬ美人によろこびの接吻をされた。人混みを逃れて路傍のカフェに寄ったチャールズは偶然戦友クロオド・マティヌに会い、彼の同伴者マリオン・エルスワースから、彼女の家の祝賀パーティに招待された。チャールズはこの家で、先程接吻された娘に会った。彼女はマリオンの妹ヘレン、アメリカを捨てパリに来た派手好きな父ジェイムズに似て奔放な性格の持ち主だった。チャールズは温和なマリオンのひそかな恋心に気づかず、ヘレンと恋におちた。そして現地除隊してヘレンと結婚し、昼は通信社に籍を置き、夜は小説を書きつづけた。チャールズの多忙な生活にひきかえヘレンは相変わらず華美な生活を送り続けるのだが…。

　チャーリー（ヴァン・ジョンスン）は薄給の新聞記者で小説家を志している。パリで美人のヘレン（エリザベス・テイラー）と結婚した。ふたりの愛は、微妙なすれちがいから、ヘレンの死で終わる。
　ところが、なぜすれ違うようになったか、この映画は語ってくれない。チャーリーは言葉も行動も唐突で、軽薄で鈍い男にしかみえない。ヘレンが気まぐれにダメな男と結婚したというのならば、それはそれで一篇の物語になるが、もとよりそんな意図ではない。
　感動的なストーリーをつくりたかったのに、突っ込み不足でありきたりのメロドラマになってしまった。原作を知らないが、やはり俗っぽいのかな、とおもった。２３歳のエリザベス・テイラーはとてもきれい。演技にも心をうたれた。

エリザベス・テイラー演じるヘレンは、大胆で奔放で、姉とはまた違った魅力のある女性であるかのように思えたが、同時に、繊細で神経質な面も持ち合わせており、夫とのすれ違いに悩み、ついには死を遂げてしまう、という悲しい結末を迎えてしまった。華やかなイメージと哀れな最後のギャップが大きいストーリー展開だと思った。リズの映画を観るのはこれが初めてではあるが、途中でヘアスタイルが変わるが、個人的には、長い方が良いと感じた。ヘレンに残された夫は最後には娘を引き取れることになるので、まぁ、ハッピーエンドということになるのだろうか。
