内容紹介

深夜のロサンゼルス。フルスピードで走ってきた車がパシフィック保険会社の前で止まり、肩をピストルで射ぬかれた勧誘員ウォルター・ネフがよろめきながら下りてきた。彼は会社の自室に入り、テープレコーダーに向かって上役バートン・キースに宛てた口述を始めた。数カ月前、ウォルターは会社に自動車保険をかけているディートリチスンを訪ねたが不在で、夫人のフィリスに会った。翌日フィリスはウォルターのアパートを訪れ、夫を殺してそれを事故死と見せ、倍額保険を取ろうともちかけた。足を怪我したディートリチスンは、近く開かれるスタンフォード大学の同窓会へ汽車で行く予定だった。最初は当惑するウォルターも、フィリスの肉体の魅力に負けて、ついに計画を手伝う破目になった。保険に入ろうとしないディートリチスンからサインを詐取して保険証書を作った2人は、犯行当夜のアリバイを作って実行に入るのだが…

　犯罪映画にはひきつけられる。度胸がないから自分ではなにもできない。危ない橋を渡ることもない映画は、犯罪の気分を味わうにはもってこいである。そして、不道徳かもしれないが、たいていの映画で、完全犯罪が成立して犯人が逃げのびてほしいと願っている。
　保険会社の営業マンのウォルター（フレッド・マクマレー）の前に悪女のフィリス（バーバラ・スタンウィック）があらわれて、夫に保険をかけて殺す相談をもちかける。この計画から実行までの前半は、計画も精緻とはいえないし都合がよすぎるけれど、まあまあおもしろい。
　さて後半は、死体が見つかって結論は一応事故ということになるが、自殺説と他殺説の両方がでてきたり、フィリスの正体が徐々にあかるみにでてくる。そして、ウォルターにも観客にも意外な事実を聞かされる。
　しかし、惜しいことには、これらがみんな流れの中でわかってくるのでなく、こうだった、ああだったと、説明されてしまうので、緊迫感がうすくなったし、リアリティもとぼしくなった。映画はフィリスの計画と行動がうまく説明できていないのである。素人考えだが、脚本の練り方が十分ではなかった、とおもう。

ﾌｨﾙﾑ・ﾉﾜｰﾙの傑作中の傑作ですが、それは主演のB.ｽﾀﾝｳｨｯｸの魅力と真相を追究するE.G.ﾛﾋﾞﾝｿﾝの名演に大きく起因すると思います。特に、ｽﾀﾝｳｨｯｸは｢大人の綺麗な女性」の中に悪女の雰囲気を忍ばせ、それが凄い迫力に感じ、彼女が登場しない場面でこれに対抗するかのように存在感を見せるE.G.ﾛﾋﾞﾝｿﾝの老練な貫禄も印象的でした。今ではｽﾀﾝｳｨｯｸのように容姿は綺麗で奥に潜む残酷性を表現できる女優さんはいなく、このような作品も必然的に少なくなったと感じる次第です。

　この手の廉価版に文句を言う方がおかしい、と思われる
かもしれませんが、値段を考えても画質が酷すぎます。
（ぼやけているというか、滲んでいるというか、そんな状態。）
　最近、廉価版DVDを幾つか購入して、思ったほど酷くない
画質のものが結構あったので、あるいはひょっとして、と
いささか期待して購入しました、が。。。。。

　これを買うくらいなら、レンタル落ち中古ビデオソフトでも
購入したほうが比べ物にならない位マシ、としか言いようがないです……
