内容紹介

リナは、ロンドンからの列車の中でジョンと知り合った。リナは町の有力者、マッキンロウ将軍の娘だった。ジョンとの結婚に反対され駆け落ち同然にジョンと結婚してしまう。新居は豪華だった。しかし、リナの父親から贈られてきた年代ものの椅子を骨董屋に売ってしまうジョンに疑念が生じた。そして、新婚旅行の請求書が送られてきた。ジョンは無一文だったのだ。リナはジョンに真面目に働くよう説得した。そこへ、リナの父親のマッキンロウ将軍の死の報せが入る。遺産の分配では、将軍の肖像画しかもらえないことにジョンの機嫌は悪かった。ジョンの友人ビーキーとジョンは二人で不動産会社を設立する計画を立て始めた。断崖の景観の良い場所にリゾートの計画だ。夜、二人の話を聞くこともなく、スクランブルでカードをもてあそんでいるうちに、そのカードが偶然、'M・U・R・D・E・R'(殺人)となっていた。リナはジョンへの疑惑が脳裏をよぎる。

1942年アカデミー賞３部門にノミネートされ、見事ジョーン・フォンテインが主演女優賞になったヒッチコック映画の傑作です。ジョーンは前作“レベッカ”でもノミネートされているので2年連続のノミネートでしたね。

ジョーンは1930年代後半から少しづつ人気が出始め、ヒッチコック映画の二作で頂点に達した名女優です。私は1950年“旅愁”でのジョーンが好きです。グラントとは1939年“ガンガ・デイン”で共演しているの仲ですので、今回は彼女も自分の演技に集中できたのでしょう。

グラントは同年のアカデミー賞には別の作品でノミネートされており、正しく絶好調同士の共演といえますね。

邦題の“断崖”は映画を観れば納得するところですが、やはり直訳的に“疑惑”の方がよかった気がする。この作品はテレビ用にはカラーで放映されていて、ダンスシーン等の美しさはすばらしいの一言。

また、グラントがジョーンを“モンキーフェイス”と何度も呼ぶところは当時はユーモアで解釈できるが、現在では女性差別の対象になるところです。気をつけましょう！

さぁこの映画残念なことに僕の周りでは評判がそんなに良くありませんでした
ラストシーンで文句を言う人が非常に多かったですね　けどこれはヒッチコックの教科書的作品ですごい傑作だと僕は思うんです
主役はヒッチコック映画の常連(ジョーン・フォーティン)は列車で知り合った男と知り合い
結婚するこの夫は働きもしないで遊んでいる　やがて自分の父の死の知らせが入っていく
そうしている間に夫が殺したんじゃないかという疑惑がわく　夫が怖いその精神状態スリラーの決定版と呼ぶに相応しい傑作です

疑心暗鬼になり夫を殺人犯ではないかと疑い始めた妻。
二階の自室にいるその妻のためにカップに入れたミルクを運び暗い階段を上る夫。
ミルクは不気味なほど白い。白すぎるほど不自然に白い。
夫を疑う妻（と観客）はミルクが毒入りではないかと考える。

母が若い頃、銀座でこの映画を見て「あのミルクの恐ろしい白さだけは絶対忘れない」と評していた。

ヒッチコック監督はまさにその「白すぎるミルク」を表現するため、ミルクに電球を入れて光らせながら撮影したそうだ・・・

とにかく四の五の言わずにご覧頂きたい。ミステリー（というよりスリラー）が嫌いでない人なら絶対のお勧めだ。
