内容紹介

一九四○年六月のフランス。パリは独軍の手におち、田舎道を南へ急ぐ難民の群にもナチの爆撃機は襲いかかって来た。五歳の少女ポーレットは、機銃掃射に両親を奪われ、死んだ小犬を抱いたままひとりぼっちになってしまった。彼女は難民の列からはなれてさ迷ううち、牛を追って来た農家の少年ミシェルに出会った。彼は十歳になるドレ家の末っ子で、ポーレットの不幸に同情して自分の家へ連れ帰った。ドレ家では丁度長男のジョルジュが牛に蹴られて重傷を負い、大騒ぎしているところだった。ポーレットはミシェルから死んだものは土に埋めるということを始めて知り、廃屋になった水車小屋の中に彼女の小犬を埋め十字架を立てた。墓に十字架が必要なことを知ったのも彼女にとって新知識であり、以来彼女はこのお墓あそびがすっかり気に入ってしまった。ジョルジュは容態が悪化して急死した。そのとき、隣家のグーアルの息子フランシスが軍隊を脱走して帰って来た。グーアル家とドレ家は犬猿の仲だったが、フランシスとドレの娘ベルトとは恋仲であった。そして、ジョルジュの葬式の日、ドレは葬式馬車の十字架がなくなったことに気づくのだった…。」

両親の死の意味がわかっていない幼い孤児ポーレット。
彼女が世話になる家の息子ミシェル。ポーレットに喜んでもらうために
十字架を盗み・・・。
下町の庶民の家に育ったミシェルが、お嬢様育ちのポーレットに対しかわいい恋心を抱きます。
最後のシーンで「ミシェール・・ミシェール・・ママ・・ママ・・」と言いながら
人ごみの中に消えていくポーレット。そこにギターの哀しい音色が重なります。
戦争がもたらす悲惨さ、戦争こそ禁じられた遊びなのかもしれません。

　幼い少女のポーレットは空襲で親を失い、農家のドレ一家に引き取られた。その家の少年のミシェルは彼女に恋心をもった。ふたりは墓地から十字架をぬすんで動物や虫の死骸を埋める。秘密の遊びとともに、ドレ一家と隣家のいさかいや卑俗な日常生活が並行して描かれていく。最終的にはポーレットはパリに戻されてミシェルとはなされる。戦争の悲劇を象徴した場面だ。
　本作品にはいささか当惑をおぼえる。背景が戦争であり、ポーレットの両親が銃撃されたり、ドレの長男の死があったりと死が充満していること、大人の世界は口論や争いがほとんどであるが、これも農村のありのままの姿であること等々はわかるのだが、これらは映画としては並みの作りではないかと思うとともに、それ以上のどういう意味があるのかわからなくなる。
　傑作中の傑作との評価が定着しているので、余計にそう思ってしまうのかもしれないが、ここがとくにすごいという場面を見つけることができない。以上は個人的な感想で（三つ星にしたが）評価はむつかしい。
