内容紹介

妻に先立たれ、幼い息子トミーと老いた母との暮らしが続く人気ライターのフィリップ、通称フィルは、週刊スミスの編集長ミニフィの招きでカリフォルニアからニューヨークに移り、早速反ユダヤ主義の記事を依頼された。この記事の発案者は、ミニフィの姪キャシーで、フィルは彼女に心を動かされる。ともかく今回の仕事は厄介だった。幼馴染みでユダヤ人のデヴィッドに相談しようかとさえ悩んだ末、フィルは自分自身でユダヤ人になり切ることにする。社の幹部との昼食会で、ユダヤ人だと名乗ったため、噂はあっと言う間に広まった。真実を知っているのは、母、トミー、ミニフィ、キャシーだけだ。フィルの秘書も実はユダヤ人だが、それが知れると雇ってもらえなかったとフィルに告白する。フィルがユダヤ人と知ると、人々は急によそよそしくなる。そして、フィルの勇気ある行動が真実を暴きだしていく…。

当時、ユダヤ人や黒人に対する差別が横行していた。それを題材にしたのがこの作品である。

主人公は人気のルポライター。ユダヤ人差別を体感するため、
自分がユダヤ人だと偽って生活することにしたが…

さまざまな差別を受けつつも、それに真っ向から立ち向かう主人公。
だが、差別は彼の友人や家族をも蝕んでいく。
一時は絶望的になりながらも、最後には希望が見える。
見終わった後の爽快感が素晴らしい。

　アカデミー作品賞を受賞しながら４０年間も日本では劇場公開されなかった、などというのはこの作品ぐらいでしょう。ほとんど全てをセリフで説明しようとしているので映画的には退屈。１９４７年のアマリカ映画では「十字砲火」のほうが映像表現的には面白い。ただ、こういったテーマに感心のある人なら当然のごとく見ておきべき古典的映画。
