内容紹介

ロンドンのソーントン街。ガス燈がともる頃、幼少時代のポーラ(イングリッド・バーグマン)はイタリアに留学しようとしていたのだが、同居していた誉れ高きオペラ歌手の叔母が何者かに殺害されるという痛ましい事件が発生した。事件は未解決のまま、ポーラはイタリアに旅だった。そして10年の時が過ぎポーラは作曲家のグレゴリー(シャルル・ボワイエ)と結婚し、グレゴリーの希望に沿ってロンドンへと帰ってくるが、次々とポーラの身の回りに不可解なことが起き始め、ポーラは次第に自分の精神状態に自信が持てなくなり、部屋のガス燈もチラついて見えてくるようになってくる…。夫のグレゴリーは、病状が悪化してきたポーラに対し、精神病院に入院するように勧めるが…。一方、刑事のブライアン(ジョセフ・コットン)は、執拗に10年前の事件を追いかけていた。捜査を進めるうちに、とんでもない事実が明らかに…。

　失礼ながらジョージ・キューカーがこれほどの監督とは知らなかった。でも、この映画を傑作にしているのは役者が本当に持ち味を出していることにある。バーグマンを評価する人もいるけれど、圧巻はシャルル・ボワイエの悪魔的なあの表情でしょう。その表情は恐怖を高めるとともに、観客に状況をわかりやすく示すことで、バーグマンにどんどん感情移入させる効果を持たせている。監督の腕か、役者の技か。忘れてならないのは、アンジェラ・ランズベリーである。彼女の存在がなければ、この映画のおもしろさが半減したのは間違いない。

アメリカの聖女といわれた女優イングリット　バーグマンがアカデミー主演女優賞を獲得をした名作が嬉しい低価格で登場です、ただ、美しいだけの彼女を観るならば映画（カサブランカ）で十分ですが、彼女は決してただ、美しいだけの女優さんではありません、精神的にも実にタフなしし座の女優、それが彼女なのです、（生の最後まで演技をした）と自らの墓碑に記させる程、この名作で魅せる彼女の演技に圧倒される事、間違いなしです、白黒映画ですが、それが一層、彼女の瑞々しい肌の美しさを引き立てています、脚本も見事、俳優陣も実に豪華、映画の評価は皆さんがなさって下さいね、文句なしの名作です。

ポーラがグレゴリーに精神的に追い詰められる場面では、観ている側としても同様に心理的に追い詰められる気がしたし、正直、グレゴリーが怖かった。この俳優さん（シャルル・ボワイエ）が妙にグレゴリー役にぴったりなので、恐怖感は倍増した。ポーラがそのうち殺されてしまうのではないかと心配していたが、警察が乗り込んできたので頼もしかった。音楽を愛する主人公のストーリーだけあって、端々に出てくる曲も作品に彩りをそえる。
