とうとう出ます。私はこの作品をレコード（彼の大ジャケット付）とＢＴＯのＣＤの両方で持っていますが、実は私が最初に購入した彼のアルバムです。私の数少ない自慢の宝物です。いったいどのような仕様で発売されるのでしょうか。日本では、スコット５と発売されあっという間に廃盤となってしまった幻のアルバムです。私は、このアルバムをscottのneues tagesと読んでいますが、中身は、今聞いてみてやっとその良さがわかる名曲ばかりです。prologueからthe war is overまではすべて彼とady semelとの共作です。prologueとlittle thingsはヴィエトナム戦争に直接に触発された作品でしょうけど、今聞いてみるとその歌詞はその時代の拘束を飛び越えてています。long about nowはesther ofarimによって歌われていますが、なんという象徴的な歌詞でしょうか、”死者の帰還”ともいうべきスコットの歌詞が美しい彼女の声によって歌われています。それに続くのが、スコットお得意のテーマというべき部屋に閉じ困った人間（地下室の住人か？）のテーマ”time operator"です。最後はtil the band comes in とthe wai is overで締めくくられます。スコットがここで取り上げた人間の閉塞状況はいつも変わることはありません。不思議なことにこの後に、いくつかのスタンダードが含まれています。その理由は容易に推測できますが、その背景は何であれ、michel legrandのwhat are you doing the rest of your lifeは、忘れられない出来上がりです。

このアルバムのオーケストラの弦の響かせ方の美しさは比類のないものでジョアンジルベルトをプロデュースしていたトニーリピューマのアレンジワークに似ているがそれよりやや正統な響きを醸しだす。その違いは何と言ったらよいだろう。マーラーの交響曲５番のあの有名な第４楽章のアダージョ、ルキノヴィスコンティの映画「ベニスに死す」にも使われたこの美しい旋律をクラウディオアバード/ベルリンフィルのものと映画のサウンドトラックを指揮したフランコマンニーノ/サンタチェチリア国立音楽院管弦楽団のものとを聞き比べて判るようなものと言うべきか。でも本当はそんな事はどうでもよいのであって、この若いスコットウォーカーの文学の香りのする創造力に溢れた時期の作品に斯く言うストリングスの美しさが詰め込まれている事の幸運に感謝しておけば良い。特筆すべきは５曲目で、このイスラエル出身の女性歌手のエスターオファリンのまるで女神が舞い降りたかのようなその歌声に男心を鷲づかみにされてしまうのだ。個人的な見方と言われればそれまでだが同等な男っぽい歌声で言うと？、と問われれば「ラッセルワトソン」と言えばおわかり頂けるだろう。エスター自身のアルバムの殆どに共通してプロデュースの力不足を感じる私としては彼女のためにとても惜しいなと思っているが同時にここでこの一曲を残せた彼女の幸運（？）を、それを聴ける我々の幸運をも思うのである。
