「メジャーのカルト」とはうまく言ったもので、70年代のBowieはその特異なファッション、キャラクター、
音楽性を含め非常に魅力的かつ刺激に溢れた存在であり、一所に留まらないない先進的な姿勢で多くの人を
魅了し続けた。

本作は1975年にリリースされた大ヒットアルバムであり、Bowieがソウルミュージックに傾倒していた時期の
ものだ。録音は当時世のミュージックシーンを席巻していたフィラデルフィア（俗に言うフィリー）と
ニューヨークにて行われた。具体的には1・6・8がニューヨークで、それ以外がフィラデルフィアでの録音だ。

表面的には、非常にポップな趣の1、言わずと知れたBeatlesナンバーの6、John Lennon・ギタリストのCarlos Alomar
との3者での共作でありBowieにとって初の全米No.1となった8(宮沢りえが紅白で歌っていたな~）と、ニューヨーク
での作業が注意を引く。が、やはり本作の聞き所はフィラデルフィアで創り上げられた曲だと言い切りたい。
大きく繰り広げられるDavid Sanbornのサックス、セクシーなファルセットを使いバック･ボーカル(デビュー前の
Luther Vandrossの名前も）と掛け合うBowieなど、楽曲の良さも含めて魅力がぎっしりつまっている。
Bowieの数あるヒット作の1枚と言う以上に、当時フィリーソウルがどれほどの勢い・影響力があったかを示す、
音楽史的にも価値のある作品だ。

私が最高に好きなＤ．ボウイの作品の１枚。ダイアモンドの犬までの路線と決別して、初めてアメリカ録音を敢行し、アメリカン・ソウルを大胆に取り入れ、フェイムが初の全米Ｎｏ．１ヒットとなる等、米国市場で大成功した傑作。ボウイはこの後も音楽スタイルを変え続けるのだが、ソウルに関心を持ったとたんタイトル曲のようなかっこいいことこの上ない名曲を作ってしまうのだから、ボウイの才能はやはりずばぬけている。このタイトル曲を収録しているだけでも、本作の価値は不滅。ＡＯＲ的雰囲気のＭ２、Ｍ７も大好きな曲だ。

このように本作はボウイ流にソウルを咀嚼した曲が多いが、もう一つ無視できない要素がある。それはジョン・レノン自身がギターで参加しているアクロス・ザ・ユニバースの素晴らしいカヴァーに代表されるように、ビートルズへの敬愛。タイトル曲でA day in the lifeから歌詞の一節I heard the news today oh boyを挿入しているが、他人の曲・歌詞の短い引用がこんなに決まっている例は滅多にない。この１節が強烈に記憶に刻み込まれた結果、私は、タイトル曲を、そして本作を３０年以上忘れることができなくなったのである。

発表当時、プラスティックソウルなどと英国のメディアに揶揄された作品だが、その後の
白人ミュージシャンのソウル/Ｒ＆Ｂアプローチの雛形となった重要な作品。
デイヴィッド・サンボーン、ルーサー・ヴァンドロス、アンディ・ニューマークなどが豪華
かつ手堅いプレイを聞かせる。アメリカの人種問題やニクソン大統領のスキャンダル
に言及した歌詞も興味深いソウルフルなタイトル曲、ファンキーな(3)、ボッサ風味の(4)
,ドラマティックな(過ぎる?)ビートルズの(6)そしてジョン・レノンをゲストに迎えた
スライ流のファンク(8)などを収録
