内容紹介

ローマの指揮官メッサラはエルサレムにやってきた。彼は幼い頃にもこの地に住んでいたことがあり、豪族のハー家の息子、ベン・ハーと兄弟のように育った。2人は再会を喜んだが、それもつかの間。互いの立場は昔のようにはゆかなかった。やがて新総督が着任し、パレードが行われる。それを見物していたベン・ハー一家をメッサラは反逆者として無実であることを知りながら捕らえる。ベン・ハーは奴隷として大型船の漕ぎ手にさせられてしまう。その道中、成人したイエスから水をもらい元気を取り戻すベン・ハーは彼のまなざしを胸に復讐の鬼になって3年を生き延びる。やがて彼の乗った船は海上の戦いに巻込まれる。ちょうど乗り合わせた司令官アリアスは不屈の魂をベン・ハーに見出し、目をつけていた。戦いの最中、海に放り出されたアリアスを救ったのはベン・ハーであった

紀元前、ローマ帝国の勢力が圧倒する中、ユダヤ人・「ベン・ハー」（主演：ラモン・ノヴァロ）とローマ人・「メッサラ」の両民族の闘争を描く、１９２５年製作・『フレッド・ニブロ監督』の超スペクタクル作品。
この映画の最大の呼び物（：見せ場）である海賊船がローマの軍艦を襲うガレー船の海戦シーン、宿敵メッサラとの壮絶な戦車競争シーンなど、壮大な戦闘シーンを撮影するカメラマンの力量はみごととしかいいようが無いのではないかと痛感するが・・・・・。
また、神の恵みを与える救世主・キリストの登場、ドラマティクなベン・ハー家の家族愛を描くヒューマンな背景も見どころと思うが・・・・・・。
１９２５年製作（大正１４年）のサイレント作品とは言え、巨額の製作費を投じた「実写と特撮」のリアルな映像は生々しさがあり、昨今の映像に勝るとも劣らない鮮やかさでその撮影技術と人海戦術で描く大群衆の迫力は凄い！
また、古き良き時代の秘境探検・怪獣・歴史劇・空の空中戦を「実写と特撮」で描く『サイレント作品』には、１９１６年製作・「イントレランス」、１９２５年製作・「ロスト・ワールド」・「戦艦ポチョムキン」、１９２７年製作・「つばさ」（：いずれもＤＶＤ）などがあり、その迫力は凄い！

チャールトン・ヘストンさんのベン・ハーは何度か見ているのですがこちらは初めてです。

瓦？煉瓦？を落としてしまうのがこちらはベンハーなんですね。
チャールトン・ヘストンさんのほうでは妹さんだったような気がしますが。

ほとんど白黒の画像で人の言葉が声としてありませんから無声映画というのでしょうか、このことに最初は戸惑いましたがだんだん慣れてくるといい雰囲気に思えました。

海賊との戦い・・・なんだかわけがわかりませんでした。あれで勝利ってどうして？
ベン・ハーで有名な戦車戦・・・チャールトン・ヘストンさんのベン・ハーとは違ったよさが十分に出ています。

こちらのベン・ハーはチャールトン・ヘストンさんのベン・ハーを見ていないとわかりにくいかも知れません。

ＤＶＤのことをよく知らなかったので購入して初めて知りました。カラーとモノクロとあると。これはモノクロでしかも、トーキーが無い。
