内容紹介

ブールジェ飛行場に到着した飛行家アンドレ・ジュリユーは、熱狂した群衆に迎えられた。彼は大西洋を23時間で横断したのだ。しかし、彼は差し出されたマイクに「自分がこの冒険に挑んだのはある女性のためだったが、その彼女が出迎えに来ていない」と不満を表明した。その女性、ラ・シェネイ侯爵夫人クリスチーヌは、パリの邸で小間使いのリゼットに着替えを手伝わせながら、そのラジオ放送を聞いていた。夫のロベールを含め、二人の仲は社交界で周知の事実なのだ。ロベールもまた、愛人ジュヌビエーブと密かに関係を続けていた。アンドレの親友であり、クリスチーヌの相談相手でもあるオクターブは、クリスチーヌに働きかけ、ラ・シュネイ家の領地コリニエールで催される狩猟の集いにアンドレを招待させる。狩猟の日、ジュヌビエーブと別れることにしたロベールは彼女と別れのキスを交わす。それを偶然に目撃したクリスチーヌの目には、密会のように映ったのだった

恋愛物というよりも、観念的な作品だと思った。
その観念の描き方がスタイリッシュでかっこいい。
男女の愛憎を軸に、人間関係の微妙なあやが軽快に描かれている。
仮に、当人が意図したことを本当のことだとして、
当人が意図していないことは嘘だとする。
すると、本当のことは、簡単に、偶然や関係性がよびこむ
嘘のことに取って代わられ、その逆も、またしかりだ。
規則から逸脱した人が、玉突きのように次の人の逸脱を招きこむ。
そして、最後に突かれた人がこの世から逸脱する。
もっとも、そんな逸脱した死も、物語の最後には規則へと回収される。
規則に従いつつも、規則から逸脱せざるを得ない人々を
描ききった結末は、結局規則に回収されていくのだ。
その規則自体の虚実の揺らぎをみせながら・・。
ただ、この作品をリアルに愉しむには、条件があると思った。
その条件とは、貧乏なオクターブが
公爵夫人クリスチーヌと駆け落ちしようとした時に
小間使いの女がオクターブに言ったセリフを
実感をもって理解できることだと思う。
そのセリフとはこうだ。
「あなたは貧乏だわ。
　奥様にはお金がかかるわ。
　・・・・・・
　奥様は幸せになれない。」

ゲームの規則は真底から悲劇的な映画で、苦しくて予言的な虐殺のゲームです。
ここでは友情さえもが神話的に仕立てられており、ラ・シェスネイがジュリューに向かって共通の友人であるオクターブの事に触れながら
「僕はもう殆ど何も信じていない。でもこれからは友情だけは信じようと思う。」
と打ち明けている丁度その時、当のオクターブは彼らから彼らが愛している女を奪い取る準備をしています。
うつろな骸骨とでも形容すべきこの映画の出演者たちは、五感を強く刺激する死の舞踏を選んでいるのです。
