内容紹介

蛇学者のチャーリー・パイクは南米での蛇狩りを終えて、帰国のため使用人マグジーと共に豪華客船に乗り込む。チャーリーはビール会社の御曹司だが、蛇にしか興味がない世間知らず。金持ちからイカサマのカードゲームでお金を巻き上げている詐欺師一家の娘ジーンは一計を案じ、チャーリーをまんまと引っ掛けることに成功する。ところが2人は次第に惹かれあうようになり、チャーリーはある日ジーンに結婚を申し込む。一方幼い頃からチャーリーのお目付け役をしてきたマグジーは危険を察知して、船長から手に入れたジーンたちの手配写真をチャーリーに見せる。その頃、父親に結婚のことを打ち明け、いそいそと待ち合わせのバーに現れたジーンは、口を噤んだままチャーリーが差し出す手配写真を見る。2人は傷ついた心のままもとの生活に戻る。そんなある日、ジーンは彼の姪をなりすましてパイク邸に乗り込むことをもくろむのだった。

１０年以上前でしょうか。プレストンスタージェスのリバイバル上映がかかったのは。その時は本当にびっくりしました。ＰＳのスクリューボールコメディに圧倒され、その中でもひときわ素晴らしかったのがこの「レディ・イヴ」です。ロマンティックな船の中のシュチュエーション、カード詐欺でのチラ見せテクニック、列車の爆走カット、スラップスティックコメディの要素も満載！「絶対同じ女」です！！２１世紀を生きる我々が突然コメディ映画として、大いに笑いを期待しても難しいかもしれませんが、可愛くてお洒落なロマンティックコメディとして見て下さい。スピードガンの無い時代のスクルューボール、結構三振奪ってます！！

　４０年代のハリウッドを代表する“スクリューボール・コメディ”の名手プレストン・スタージェスの傑作コメディが、今回晴れて廉価版として手に入る事が出来るようになった。メデタイ！スクリューボール・コメディは、とにかくテンポの良さとギャグの切れ味と畳み込みが身上だが、今作は、序盤の、豪華客船でのビール会社の御曹司と詐欺師の娘の出逢いから息つくヒマなく、パンチの効いたギャグの波状攻撃とウイットに富んだ台詞回しが味わえる。観る者に予断を与える間もなく、あれよあれよとドラマがスピーディに展開し、ラストまで一気に突き進み、物語にのめり込んでしまう事の快感。純粋コメディであるにも拘らず、ロマンの芳香薫るムードも素敵。これはひとえに、バーバラ・スタンウィックの魅力に拠るものだが、今作の彼女は、個人的には、自身の代表作であるファム・ファタールの傑作「深夜の告白」より遥かに魅力的だ。客室での、ヘンリー・フォンダとの、お互いへの好感をはぐしながら吐露しあう場面の長回しは、ロマンティシズムとエロティシズムが融合した名シーンだと思う。４０年代から５０年代に掛け、コメディ一筋に作品を残したスタージェス、ここ１０年位前から日本でも再評価されてきた名監督だが、実は脚本家がメガホンを取った最初の人物だったと言う。

　romantic comedy の傑作。プレストン・スタージェス監督の出世作。バーバラ・スタンウィックがじつに魅力的。
　後半の演出は、screwball comedy っぽく、特にスタンウィックの演技は、screwball 的と言えます。フォンダの演技はときに少しスラップスティック調です。しかし、ファオンダの所作はそれほど可笑しくないし、その表情、顔の表現力は、世評ほどいいとは思えません。少し無理している、地が隠しきれていない感じです。これは少数意見です。そんなこと微塵も感じない人がいても不思議ではなく、以前は高値だったのが安価でこの名作が見られるわけですから、ロマンティックコメディファンには福音と言えます。
