「皆さんご注目あれ、サッチモとバンドの演奏をお聴きあれ、聴くことを悪だという人々もいる。だがブルースはここで生まれた。ブルースを聴くと足でリズムを取りたくなる。ドアを開けて入ると金管楽器の音がする。他でこの音楽は聴けない。ディキシーの調べに乗って足でリズムを取れ、体を揺すれ、演奏を楽しめば何も失うものはない。胸が熱くなるブルースの演奏でベースが響くのを耳をすまして聴け、ブルースが生まれたニューオリンズで・・・。」バーボン・ストリートで賭博場を経営するニックは、黒人ミュージシャンたちの心の拠り所であった。オペラ・シンガーのミラリーと恋に落ちた彼はニューオリンズを追われるが、賭博から足を洗い黒人音楽を世間に認めさせるためにキャンペーンに乗り出すのだった。

　1947年公開の白黒映画で1917年のアメリカを舞台とした物語です。ラブ・ストーリーであり、同時に「新しい音楽」であったジャズが広がっていく様子を描いた作品でもあります。
　特筆すべき点はビリー・ホリデイの唯一の映画出演作であることでしょうが、見どころはそれだけではありません。ルイ・アームストロングやトロンボーンのキッド・オリー、クラリネットでウディ・ハーマンやバーニー・ビガードなど1930-50年ごろに活躍した第1級のジャズ・ミュージシャンが大挙して出演、演奏していることは見逃せません。演奏シーンが多く、十分満足できました。
　ストーリー自体はクラシック映画にありがちな安易なものですが、それでもジャズが当時どのように受け取られていたかを垣間見ることができて、興味深かったです。
　有名なことですが、ラグ・タイムや初期のジャズ、その後のビ・バップやシナトラ、・・・・これらはいずれも「下品で低俗な音楽」と言われてきましたし、思えばプレスリーなどロックン・ロールも同様の扱いを受け、またビートルズもプレスリーに「若者を堕落させる音楽」と陰口を言われました。エジプトの象形文字の記録の中にも「最近の若い者は」というくだりがあるという話は単なるジョークなのかもしれませんが、いずれにしてもこうした「新しいもの」を感覚的に否定してしまうというのはどの時代にもあることなんでしょうね。

アメリカ合衆国は、リンカーン大統領と共に南北戦争が北軍の勝利となり、奴隷制度に終止符を打ったのであるが、実際には、依然として人種差別が尾を引いていた。丁度、ウイルソン大統領の時、西暦1917年のニューオールリンズを舞台に、黒人達が嬉しいにつけ悲しいにつけ唄ったブルースを基に全く斬新的なリズムが発表され、それに白人も夢中になり、体中でスイングするメロディーが生まれた。これが世に言う、Jazzの誕生である。
1947年、これを一挙に映画化されたのが、この作品である。ジャズシンガーのビリー・ホリデイがメイド役、そして、ルイ・アームストロングが本人役で出演し、全編を通じて花を咲かせている。そこに現われた、オペラ歌手ミラリーが、彼女の歌とジャズのリズムに魅せられて、更に彼女が案内した、カジノで、そのボス・ニックの心意気に次第次第に魅かれていく。二人の仲は、益々深く結ばれて行く最中、或る事件で、ニックは、ニュー・オールリンズから追放されてしまう。この先は、観てからのお楽しみ!!。監督は、「オペラ座の怪人」のアーサー・ルービン。ジャズの発祥と流行の蔭の舞台を知るためには、うってつけの教材とも言える映画だ。全編90分。筆者・大橋新也
