内容紹介

イギリスのアーチベリー飛行場は、アメリカ空軍第918爆撃隊の基地だった。在英爆撃隊の司令官プリッチャード将軍は、ドイツの戦力の源泉となっている軍需工場を壊滅させるために、危険と知りつつも、指揮下の舞台に昼間爆撃を敢行せしめた。第918爆撃隊は航空士のジムメルマン中尉の誤算により、敵の集中攻撃をうけて、4分の1以上の未帰還機を出した。温情家だった隊長のダヴェンポート大佐は、これを味方の不運として表沙汰とせずにいたが、指令部付きのサヴェージ准将は親友である大佐の心境を見るに忍びず、率直にプリッチャード将軍に進言した。こうして、第918爆撃隊はサヴェージ准将が代わって指揮をとることになった。サヴェージは隊の士気が著しく弛緩していることを知った。すでに責任を感じたジムメルマン中尉は自殺してしまったが、その他の責任者に対し彼は容赦なく賞罰を明らかにし、猛訓練を全員に課した。

第２次大戦中、英国に基地を置きドイツ本土へ白昼爆撃に出撃する、アメリカ陸軍「第９１８爆撃隊」の指揮官の奮闘を描く、１９４９年製作・『ヘンリー・キング監督』の傑作航空映画。
【士気の低下した部隊に厳格な指揮官が立て直しをはかり部下全員の反感をかうが、しだいに見直されみごとなチームワークを結成するが・・・・・・。】
みごとな人間関係の描写・激烈な敵戦闘機の迎撃・空を覆う対空砲火など、米・独両軍の豊富な実写フィルムをたくみに取り入れた戦闘シーンは、他に類がないと言えます。
指揮官も人間である、苦しい立場に置かれた人間的苦悩・精神的疲労による昏睡状態への展開には納得できますが・・・・・・。
みごとなチームワークを結成する厳格な指揮官（主演：グレゴリー・ぺック）の熱演・実機Ｂ‐１７爆撃機の魅力が堪能でき、きわめ付けの「名作」になったと思うが・・・・・・。
（余談：英国からドイツ本土爆撃に出撃するＢ‐１７爆撃機の好戦的な機長のドラマを描く、「戦う翼」（：ＤＶＤ）がありますので、ご参考に・・・・・・。）

英国を基地に大陸を爆撃するアメリカ人の話。
指揮官は、部下にウェットになったらあかんで、といって指揮を引き継いだグレゴリーペック。
クルーをびしびし鍛える。命令書にはいつも「最大限に努力せよ」と書いてある。
頑張らないと戦争は終わらん。
変なことするとすぐにダメ飛行機に回される。
それだけ部下をよく見ていもいる。
密集編隊の効果で、味方の損害が減ってくる。クルーも信頼するようになる。

そうやってせっかく育てたパイロットや若手指揮官も撃墜され、傷ついていく。
２１機出撃して、何機帰ってくるか。
地上で待つ身はつらい。
爆音が聞こえると、管制塔へ何機帰ってきたか聞く。
２機失ったが、１機のクルーは無事。
きょうは１機・・。
戦場はどんどん内陸へ移っていき、ついにドイツ本国奥深い重要目標へ。

地上勤務のの少佐は、いまでは帰らなかった若者の弔文を書く役目だ。
めずらしく酔って言う。
「若い、あんたらホンマに若い・・帰ってこないあいつやあいつ・・」
出撃しようとした指揮官は、ある朝身体がいうことを聞かなくなる。
椅子に座って頑張ってるような、何かに耐えているような・・。
「マキシマム・エフォートを重ねて、ついに感情を抑えきれなくなったのだ」と軍医の言葉。
この時代のアメリカ映画は、なんでこうもマジメなんだろう。
