内容紹介

ニューヨークのレミック楽譜出版社にある日ジョージ・ガーシュインという若者がピアノ弾きとして雇われてきた。彼の仕事は朝から晩までこの店の楽譜をお客に弾いてきかせることだった。まもなく彼の作曲した「スワニイ」はブロードウェイの人気者アル・ジョルソンに認められ、ジョルソンの「シンバッド」で唄われたこの曲は作曲家ガーシュインの名とともにたちまち全米を風靡した。レミックの店で知り合った歌手ジュリイも彼の「本当に素晴らしい」を唄って人気をたかめ二人の間は急速に親しさを増していった。やがて彼に注目したボール・ホワイトマンは、ジャズ交響楽の作曲を依頼した。彼は3週間を費やしてひとつの曲を作り上げた。ついにアメリカ音楽史に1頁を画する記念すべき日が訪れた。1924年2月12日、不朽の傑作「ラプソディ・イン・ブルー」の演奏が終わったときエオリアン・ホールを埋めつくした聴衆の拍手と歓呼は場内をゆるがせた。音楽を愛し、命の限り情熱を注いだジョージ・ガーシュインの生涯を描いた傑作。

ガーシュウィンが死んでから、わずか８年後に製作された、彼の伝記映画。
編曲などはされているものの、全編にわたって彼の音楽が流れます。

白眉はなんといっても、「ラプソティ・イン・ブルー」の初演シーン。実際に初演を指揮したポール・ホワイトマンが実名で出演・指揮しています。
他にも、後に「巴里のアメリカ人」に出演することになるピアニストのオスカー・レヴァントなど、主人公生前の友人・知人が多数、自分役で出演。

特典などがついた豪華版が見当たらないのが残念ですが、逆に考えると、こんな名作がたったワンコインで買えること自体が驚愕です。

英語のタイトルは、「ラプソディー・イン・ブルー」。 題を聞いてわかる人も居ると思うけどガーシュウィンの伝記映画です。
1930年〜1950年頃は伝記映画がすごく多く作られた時期で、作曲家の伝記モノは結構な数が作られました。とはいえ、当時の伝記モノはドキュメンタリーとは程遠く経歴などは都合良い様に変更されているので史料価値はないのですが、業績を称えて紹介するのが目的なので流行った曲なんかは満載されているのが魅力です。メドレーみたいにイッパイ詰まってるのがオイシイです。

ガーシュウィンは交響曲も書いてるけれど、ブロードウェイ・ミュージカルやレビューの曲もたくさん書いているので、ショーのシーンも含まれてて観ても楽しめる作品になってます。曲もたっぷり聞かせる構成だし、500円でこれだけ見せてくれれば文句はないってところです。白黒映画なので、画像の色劣化がない分、安いＤＶＤでも見やすいです。

また、ジョージ・ホワイト（ブロードウェイのレビューのプロデューサー）など、名前は有名でも本人はなかなかお目にかからないというような人も自分自身を演じて出演しているのが貴重です。

まさにアメリカ交響楽という題名にふさわしい映画です。ガーシュインの一生がよくわかり、ガーシュインの音楽が満喫できます。更に、ジャズ、タップ、クラシックと様々な音楽が楽しめます。この映画を観て益々ラプソディーインブルーが好きになりました。そして、音楽を聞いているシーンでの一人一人の表情など、細部までいい作品です
