　ホーメイ、口琴、テルミン、さまざまな声と倍音の実験を重ねてきた巻上公一が、以前にもまして変幻自在の声を操るボーカリストとして帰ってきた。そしてヒカシューは、その瞬発する声に即座に応じ、うねる、粘菌のごときバンドとなって我々の前に現れた。
　規則正しいリズムとメロディを期待する人には意外な音だろう。しかし、人が声と音を交わし合うための形式は、わたしたちの考える偏狭な「音楽」よりも、ずっと広いのだ。
　誰も守っていなかった外野にボールが転々と転がるように、広々とした音楽のグラウンドを悠々と声が駆け抜け、音が横切り、その軌跡が歌になる。30年のキャリアを持つこのバンドの、なんと若々しいことだろう。

今年（2008年）で結成30年のキャリアを誇るロックバンド、ヒカシューの2005年NYでの録音盤。1979年のメジャー・デビュー（アルバム『ヒカシュー』東芝EMI）以前から“即興とソングの混在”にこだわり続けてきたボーカリスト巻上公一とバンドメンバーによる、進化し続ける作曲と歌の形態がCDアルバムというパッケージ作品に結実した傑作。あくまでも“うたうたい”のいるロックバンドの形式にこだわりながらも、転がり続ける物体のように予測不可能な曲の展開や紡ぎ出される言葉たちが非常に濃密なグルーブを生み出しヒカシューの生ライブを見た後と同じような興奮が体験できる。即興演奏もするロック・プレイヤーとしての長いキャリアを持つそれぞれのメンバーたちの非常に強い意気込みと自負が演奏からもあふれ出してきて感動を覚える。今回の録音でもspecial thanksに名前の出ている巻上の盟友、ジョン・ゾーンのレーベルTZADIKからリリースされている『HIKASYU HISTORY』（初期からの未テイク集）と一緒に聴くと、ヒカシューが30年前から一徹した意思を持った硬派なロック・バンドだと分かる（だが、しかし。キュートな一徹親父ともいうべきユニークな父性性は健在）。

かのルー・リードがメタル・マシーン・ミュージックを発表した当時、
彼のファンがそれを聴いてどう思ったか、少しだけわかったような…
そういうアルバムです。聴く人を、選びます。

私自身デビュー当時からヒカシューの音楽を聴いて来ましたが、
新作さえ出れば、それがどんなものでも手放しに絶賛する人たちの
心理については理解出来ません。
やはり、そこには「得るべき何か」を期待して買うわけです。
このアルバムに関して言えば、完全に自分たちの世界に埋没して
しまって、聴かされる者の耳には、遠慮も容赦もしていない。
よく言えば、マニア向け。悪く言えば、悪趣味。

なにも「売れている音楽がいい音楽」だとは思っていない。
ただ、聴く人の耳を置き去りに、好き勝手な方向へ迷走していく
「即興」というスタイルが万人にアピールしうる物でしょうか。
むしろ、待望の新作という期待を裏切ってはいなかったでしょうか。
あまりにブッ飛びすぎていて、もう、その感覚についていけない。
