熱演型の名優ダスティン・ホフマンが、なんと女装でお目見えするハートフル・コメディの快作。実力はあるのだがウルサ型のためになかなか仕事が回ってこない役者のトッツィーは、ひょんなことから女装してTVドラマの役をもらい、女優として大人気を得てしまうのだが…。デイヴ・グルーシンの軽快な都会派音楽に乗せながら、さっそうと街を歩くホフマンのおばさん女優ぶりが、とにもかくにもお見事。この手の作品にありがちなオカマチックな気色悪さなどみじんもない。
また、社会派シドニー・ポラック監督作品らしく、コミカルななかに現代なおも続く男女差別の実態をもそこはかとなく匂わせる。トッツィーに同性として（!?）友情の念を抱く女優ジュリー役のジェシカ・ラングは、本作でアカデミー賞助演女優賞を受賞。一方、トッツィーに惚れてしまうジュリーの父親役チャールズ・ダーニングも、すこぶるいい味を出している。（的田也寸志）
