1956年10月26日の有名なプレスティッジのマラソン・セッションで録音された4部作の一つ。 4部作の中でも僕はこれが一番好き。『マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン』のペットの音。誰がこれ以上の素晴らしい音を出せるだろう?この音を聴かないで死ななくて良かった。

マイルスは不遇時代にめんどうを見てくれたプレスティッジにこの頃金銭的な不満を持っていて、それが原因でコロンビアと契約することになる。それが1956年のことでこの段階でマイルスはプレスティッジとの間にこの年のおしまいまでにLPにして4枚分作品を創ることを約束していた。これをわずか2日間で25曲、しかもほとんどがワン・テイクでOKという脅威のレコーデイングを行う。これが有名なプレスティッジでのマラソン・セッションで、プレスティッジ最後の4部作(クッキン・ワーキン・スティーミン・リラキシン)だ。

マイルスはプレスティッジに16枚のアルバムを残しているが、この時の充実度は他に例を見ない驚異的なものだったと言えるだろう。

面白いのはプレスティッジのその後の対応だ。これから益々マイルスの人気が上がることを予想したプレスティッジは、その録音を年に1枚という超スローペースで徐々に世に送り出したのだ。まず、『クッキン』を1957年に、次の『リラクシン』を1958年3月に、次の『ワーキン』を1960年2月に、最後の『スティーミン』を1961年9月に出したのだ。この戦略はハード・バップからモードへと移り変わるマイルスの傑作がコロンビアから出される中大成功をおさめたのだ。

マイルスだけでなくジョン・コルトレーンを語る場合においてもこの4部作は一つとして外せない大傑作なことは言うまでも無い。マイルスはこの時のレギュラー・クインテットを結成して約1年。特にジョン・コルトレーンの成長がこの4部作を不動のものとしている。これを聴かずして何を聴くのか、と言える作品だ。

ジャズは、音楽理論やアドリブ等、専門的知識がないと理解できないものでしょうか？もちろんビ・バップからハード・バップ、モード等のスタイルの変遷を理解するためには、重要なことかも知れません。ただ、大切なのは音楽としてどのように体に響いていくのか？「My Funny Valentine」のリリシズムや「Airgein」のスリルは、直感的に音楽を聴いている人であれば、瞬間的に反応してしまう類の感触を滲み出しています。理屈ではなく感覚で音楽を捉えるロック・ファンの方におすすめしたい1枚です。（ロック・マイルスというと、「On The Corner」や「Bitches Brew」が定番のおすすめということになると思いますが、一番ロック的な1枚は実はこれだと思います）

マイルスにはマイ・ファニー・バレンタインという64年のリンカーンセンターでのライブ・アルバムがある。僕は長らくマイルスのベスト・ライブだと信じてきたしいまだに、マイルスのマイ・ファニー・バレンタインの演奏の中でベストだと思っている。（ちなみに64年の東京での同曲のライブは録音も含めバランスが悪い。）58年のプラザホテルでのビル･エバンスとのマイ・ファニー・バレンタインもたしかにいい。こちらはエバンスのピアノによって格調高く、リリカルに仕上がっている。それに比べ名演の誉れ高いクッキンのバレンタインは今ひとつ好きになれなかった。それはあまりにできすぎというか、完結した美の見本のような静的なイメージがしたからである。ここでの特徴はクインテットながら、コルトレーンをいれずにワンホーンに終始している点である。おそらく、この時代のコルトレーンはラウンド・ミッドナイトの奇跡的快演を例外にして、マイルスのリリカルな美的世界に踏み込むにはまだ無骨だったのではないだろうか。そのような、様々な状況の中でマイ・ファニー・バレンタインというマイルスの畢生の名演を聞き比べてみると、興味深いし、その曲の原点といえる演奏がこのアルバムなのである。
