週末の深夜に聞くのがやはりハマりますね。
最近のジャックナイフ・リー仕事の質の高さを実感させる作品です（プログラミングとキーボードはすべて彼が担当）。ここでも"第５のメンバー"的な活躍を見せています。
前作とくらべると、曲調が耳をひきつけるようなものでなくなった分、よく練れているのが特徴で、アルバム一枚でひとつの組曲のような雰囲気が出ています。
既存のものに対する破壊や虚無感が前作だったとすると、今作では具体的なテーマ中に希望や祈りがより込められているように感じました。

　今だったら「フランツ以降」「アクモン以前」の価値観で区切ることのできる、イギリスで04年から始まった怒涛のギター・ロック復権現象。「第二次ブリットポップ」なんて呼ばれるだけあって、フランツ然り、カサビアン然り、レイザーライト然り、やはりお祭り特有の華やかさがあった。だからこそ、今振り返ってみるとブロック・パーティーの『サイレント・アラーム』のシリアスさだけは明らかに異質だったし、お祭りのノリにどうしてもついていけない真面目っ子みたいに、周囲から孤立していた。その尖りまくったシリアスさや表現のアブストラクトさ故にのっぺりしたニヒリズムを気取ったただの学生バンドという批判もあったが、セカンド・アルバムとなる本作を聴けば、ブロック・パーティーがただ一人御輿を担がなかった理由は一目瞭然だろう。バンドの支柱であるケリー・オケレケが本作について「自分が何を意図しているのか、完璧にわかるようにしたかった」と答えているが、それはまさに前作への痛烈な自己批判だったし、だから本作で彼らは自分たちのフラストレーションの在り処とその矛先を明確に示す必要があった。そのために自分たちの個人的すぎる経験や実感を暴露することにさえ、まったく躊躇というものを感じていない。9.11や05年のロンドン・テロ以降、そのギリギリの社会情勢と何事にも無関心な町の一角との狭間で自分たちはどれほどに苦悩を強いられたか、ブラックの血を受け継いだケリー自身が実感として知っている差別されることの居心地の悪さとは如何なるものか、ファッションという名の下に多くの若者が画一化されていく中で取りこぼされていく自分――そんな赤黒く燃え上がる生活の一場面を「ある町のウィークエンド」として僕たちの日常にまで引きずり落とした、ジャンルやシーンなんて概念すら脇に寄せてみせる大飛躍作である。上に挙げたバンドたちはセカンド・アルバムで一連のムーヴメントからそれぞれ自力で巣立っていったが、ブロック・パーティーの場合そんなことすらまるで関係がない。ムーヴメントというお祭り騒ぎには近づけないし、差別はされるし、同世代の人たちは自分のことなんて理解してはくれない――でも、そうやって格別され、孤立することこそ自分たちが「表現」へと向かうモチベーションであり、そこからくるシリアスさが自分たちを更に孤立へと追いやる。そんな終わらないサークルの中でもがき続けるバンド、ブロック・パーティー。それでも、「今」を許さないことをお前たちは止めるな。

先行シングルを聴いた時点で、2ndアルバムの雰囲気がなんとなく伝わった。そしてアルバム全体を聴き終え、1stを聴いた頃より踊れなかったが、逆に歌詞やドラムのリズム、ギターのメロディーに聴き入ってしまった。デビュー当時から現在までの、彼らの心の移り変わりが表れてるようです。
ただ踊り、奮い立たせてくれるだけでは無く、メッセージ性も備えているアルバムとして満足してます♪
