ギター、ベース、ドラムスという最小編成によるロック・バンドと聞くと、スカスカのストリート・バンドか大音量で鳴らしまくるハード・ロックか、、、私の狭い了見ではせいぜいそんな想像しか出来なかったのですが、ポリスが見せつけた(知らしめた)ものの1つは"三人で出せる音の妙、出来る最高の音楽"といったものではなかったと思う訳です。
最小編成故のシャープさは言うに及ばず、達者な技量と、殊に、スティング(vo、b)の強力なキャラクタは、時代における最良のバンド形態斯く在るべしを強く示したものだと思います。
R&B、パンク、レゲエ、、多種の音楽にインスパイアされていながらも、一聴すればポリスである事を判らせる個性はこのデビュー作にしてほぼ完成の域に達しようかという勢いです。
後年、U2のエッジにおいて、そのギター・サウンド/スタイルが非常にアカデミックに取り上げられましたが、世が世なら、A.サマーズ(g)のそれももっともっと大きく扱われていた事でしょう。また、S.コープランド(ds)のキレのいいプレーもカッコいいのです。こんなプレーを聴かせるドラマーというのも、結構、居そうで居ないタイプですよね。
ポスト(ポスト・パンク?)から出でて、音楽的成長をしてゆくポリスの輝かしいデビュー作('78年作)です。

７８年発表の１ｓｔ。インディーズよりシングル「FALL OUT」を発表してオリジナル・メンバーの HENRY PADOVANI に代わってアンディー・サマーズが参加。こうして世界最強のトライアングルが出来上がって発表された１ｓｔアルバムは、さすがは歴戦のプレイヤーの作った作品だけあって既にその音楽性は完成されたものだった。思いっきり似非パンクを気取った３．もレゲエのビートを感じるし、ホワイト・レゲエというコンセプトを完全に具体化していると思う。アンディ・サマーズの器用ぶりは完全に「器用貧乏」と言い切れるほど多彩で自然。彼のキャリアの中でもレゲエというのは珍しいのだけど、ここまで完ペキに決めてくれると本質的にこういう音楽だけに精通している人と思ってしまうほど。この徹底ぶりが潔くて好きだ。もちろんスティングの癖のあるヴォーカルもシャープなようで微妙にモたるスチュワート・コープランドのドラミングもいい。
