とても美しい容貌の持ち主であるジャズ・ヴォーカリスト、ベイ・シューのセカンド・アルバムです。「天は二物を与えず」という言葉は、彼女には当てはまりませんでした。
中国の重慶出身で、現在ニューヨークで活動中ということですが、インディアナ大学で会計学を学んでいただけあって英語の発音には何の違和感も持ちませんでした。

外見と違い、声質は、意外と太くハスキーでその力強い歌唱が見た目とのギャップを生み、感覚的に気に入りました。
スタンダード・ナンバーの「Love me tender」を実に情感たっぷりに堂々と歌い上げています。ピアノのサイラス・チェスナットのリリカルな音色に乗せて、雰囲気をたっぷり感じながら彼女の歌うこの名バラードを聴いていますと、年齢も国籍も美貌も関係なく音楽に浸れました。可能性を秘めた歌唱だったと思います。

松任谷由実の「A Happy New Year」では、新しい年を迎えながらもどこかアンニュイで寂しげな雰囲気が伝わってきます。ユーミンやベイ・シューの出自の「アジアン」を意識したアレンジでしたし、静寂の中に熱い感情が流れているのが伝わる歌唱で、個人的には一番気にいった曲でした。ただ惜しむらくは、後半部分を日本語で歌ったわけですが、発音もさほどよくありませんので、無理をせず英語で通せば良かったのではと感じた次第です。

ピアノのサイラス・チェスナットのリリカルな演奏は気に入りました。ベイ・シューのバラード唱法を支える重要な役割を果たすとともに、間奏や前奏での抒情的で雄弁なピアノは相当な力量を感じさせるものでした。別の意味で収穫があったＣＤでもありました。

ジャズ？としては珍しい重慶出身の美貌のシンガーで、ジャケットが目を惹きます。１stアルバムと比べても表ジャケットの写真は表情が明るくて良いです。裏ジャケットの写真は伏し目の横顔ですが表ジャケットよりさらに良いし、ジャケットの紙を取り出して開くと、内側の写真は正面を向いた上半身でさらにいい雰囲気で撮れています。顔のアップじゃなくこちらを表にする手もあったと思いますが、顔のアップのほうがよりインパクトがあり、美貌で押そうというセールス戦略でしょうか。
　松任谷由実のA Happy New Yearを含めポップソングを多く取り入れているのも、セールスの狙いとしては悪くないと思いますが、選曲が好みに合うかどうかは、リスナーによります。個人的好みとしては、今ひとつの選曲という印象です。
　ピアノトリオを中心に演奏はしっかりしていて、いい感じですから、あとは、彼女の歌声が気に入るかどうかがポイント。特に上手いという歌手ではないように思いますが、雰囲気で聴かせるタイプで、声質が気に入れば十分満足できるでしょう。ノラ・ジョーンズとかダイアナ・クラールが大人気となっている昨今、けっこう受けても不思議はありません。もちろん、買ってみて、声が気に入らず、失敗したと思う人もいるかもしれません。
　このアルバムを商品として考えれば、悪い商品ではないと思います。消費されるタイプの作品かもしれませんが、ジャケットが気に入った人は、失敗を恐れず買ってみてもいいのではないかと思います。なお、歌詞カード、曲目解説も付いてます。

iTunes Storeの"今週のシングル"で紹介されてたユーミンの"A HAPPY NEW YEAR"のカバーで知りました!
ベイ・シューの凛とした歌声を、ピアノ・トリオの奏でる美しいサウンドが更に引き立ててます。
聴いてるだけで、とても癒される、リラックスできるサウンド。
ジャズって、こんなに素敵な音楽だったんですね。
