金田一シリーズの映画化作品は好きなジャンルであり、市川・石坂コンビの「悪魔の手鞠唄」「獄門島」などを堪能してきたが、この「八つ墓村」の出来映えは素晴らしいの一言である。

まずは「脚本」。
原作は萩原健一演じる主人公（寺田辰弥）の回想で物語が進むが、これをテンポ良く映画用に書き換えた完成度が素晴らしく、151分に納めた力量に感服する。

次は「音楽」。
作家・芥川龍之介の三男である、作曲家・芥川也寸志が担当している。
もの悲しいテーマ曲が味わいを醸しだし、落ち武者のなれの果てを奏でている。
また、田治見要蔵の村人32人虐殺のシーンは、まるでゴジラが暴れ回っているような低音とリズムで力強く、まるで殺人者に追いかけられるような恐ろしさを与えてくれる。

そして「キャスト」。
ショーケン、渥美清、山崎努、市原悦子など、主演、助演、脇役など、全てに渡り味のある俳優陣で固められ、お互いの良さを引き出している演技が素晴らしい。
特に小川真由美の存在感はピカイチ。この女優のフェロモン溢れるオーラ、演技、そしてラストシーンの壮絶さ。
個人的には八つ墓村をショーケンと２人で眺め下ろす時、風でスカートがめくれるシーンがとても艶やかで印象的。

他レビュアーにもあった通り、落ち武者8人の惨殺シーンが今ひとつ惜しかったものの、とても満足のいく作品だと思う。

「犬神家の一族」以上の大ヒットを記録した、松竹「砂の器」スタッフ＋渥美清金田一による作品。
時代を現代に移し、血縁をめぐる因果の話に、見世物小屋的要素をとり入れ、独特の世界を作っています。
渥美清は、原作者横溝氏の想像していた金田一だそうで、いい味を出していますが、出演場面が少なすぎます。
それよりも、小川真由美、山本陽子の美しさが素晴らしい。
特に、小川真由美の最高にのっていた時期の、はりのある美しさ、強さ、存在感は突出しています。
洞窟シーン、家屋炎上、山野・滝の風景や、情感豊かな音楽も素晴らしい。

ドラマ的には、恐怖映画っぽく、結局は落ち武者のたたりだったという話として観ることもできますが、
このスタッフで、あのチープな落ち武者惨殺の場面を撮ったのが信じられない。
詳しく書きませんが、ラスト、終わり方は非常に好きです。(落ち武者に感情移入してしまう)

●ショーケンが良いですね。市川監督バージョンに比べ、金田一（渥美清！）の活躍を控えめにしてショーケン映画にした点が決定的に違います。◆個人的には、市川バージョンで蝋燭を頭に巻き、叫びながら村人を斬りまくる岸辺一徳に大爆笑してしまい好きでしたが．．．
