アーティストからみれば，2月あたりにあるグラミーに向けて，レーベル側からみれば，最もアルバムが売れる年末に向けて，なんていう思惑から，新作がつくられることが多いようだ．そして，このテの"Holiday album"は，そういった時期にまさにストライクなので，主に後者の思惑から，結構安易につくられがちだ．今をときめくアーティストの多くは，多かれ少なかれ，アルバムや曲で"Holiday song"をつくったり，カバーしたりしている．

Hall & Oatesは，これまでそういうことはしてこなかった．本作が初のクリスマスソング集だ．上記のような思惑が全くないのかといえば嘘になるだろうが，とてもリキの入った，彼らの個性の生かされた作品になっている．ストリングスで始まる"overture"，それに続く"The first Noel"．彼らのファンならば，ここでのコーラスに確実にヤラれます．俺は泣いた．前半の流れが本当に素晴らしい．2曲目までのtraditionalな曲でのコーラスアレンジにヤラれた後で，John Oates作の3曲目のシンプルさが気持ちいい．Daryl Hallの5曲目も，"Do it for love"あたりの作品の雰囲気をただよわせていて好感触．後半になると，シブ好みの選曲になってくるが，そこも私のような昔からのファンには嬉しいところ．さすが．

私は日本盤を買ったが，"One on one"のライブのボーナストラックが入っている．作品性を考えれば，はっきり言って余計ですな．この輸入盤で十分じゃないかと思いやした．

　これは気が付かなかった。昨年出てたんですねぇ。考えてみればホール＆オーツのクリスマスアルバムって有りそうで無かったですね。出だしから目が（耳が？）丸くなってしまって、いやぁ素晴らしかったですわ。ソウルフルな声、堪りませんね。円熟な大人の味が溢れ出てきて、極上の時間を味わえました。オリジナル曲もスタンダード曲と絶妙に絡み合っていて昔からあったように聴こえて来ました。

　そして、一番感動したのがTheBandの「Christmas Must Be Tonight 」を歌っていたこと。あぁ彼等も聴いていたんだなぁ良かったなぁと歌声が染入りました。うーん、いきなり３回も聴いてしまった。クリスマスに聴くだけでは勿体無いですね。

　Babyface,Mariah Careyと並んでクリスマスには欠かせない必須のＣＤとなりました。
