ＮＨＫの「三国志」「平家」と違い、操演でなくアニメーション手法による短編作品集。前からVHSの作品集を所持していましたが、そちらに収録されていなかった「不射の射」「いばら姫」が入っていることもあり買い直しました。「鬼」「道成寺」「火宅」など古典を題材にした作品は、人形の完成度は言わずもがな、精緻な動きの演出と大和絵の手法を生かした背景美術、抑制の効いた音楽と効果音が凄まじい緊張感を醸し、制作から数十年経った現在でも全く色褪せません。考えつくされた構成と、贅肉を削ぎ落とした表現の完成度は凡百の長編映画に勝ります。クリエイティブな仕事に携わる人にはジャンルを問わずぜひ一度見て欲しい作品。アニメーションというカテゴリーに収まるようなものではありません。ただしファミリーで楽しく鑑賞するという用途とは対岸にあるので注意。なお初期の現代もの系（？）作品はインディーズ映画の趣があり、見る人をかなり選ぶかもしれません。

　やはり若い方にこういう作品を見ていただきたい。
　私が「火宅」を初めて見たのは、賞をとった直後、NHK総合の放送で、私はまだ学生でした。「道成寺」「火宅」と両方一度に見て、非常にショックを受けた覚えがあります。私は当時美術系の進学を夢見ていて、かなり影響を受けたものです。
　人形アニメーションは、アニメファンだったら一度は見ておけ、という古典的な手法です。特に「鬼」「道成寺」「火宅」は日本的な造形の人形が美しく、また物語も古典に根ざしたテーマで、理不尽な思いを抱きながらも深い感動がありました。日本人に生まれて幸せです。

2002年発売の同名DVDの廉価版です。
川本喜八郎を知ったのは人形劇「三国志」でしたが、時を経て最新作「死者の書」で再びこの名前に触れました。
このDVDには「死者の書」と同じ人形アニメーションと、普通の(?)アニメーションが収録されています。どちらも興味深い作品が揃っていますが、私は日本古来の濃い情念、執心を人形アニメーションで表現した「鬼」「道成寺」「火宅」が素晴らしいと思います。これらを見ると最新作「死者の書」は作られるべくして作られたのだと思わずにはいられません。
収録された作品のどれもが20分前後の短編でありながら、長編映画に匹敵する充実感があります。人形の美しさ、その顔の表情、手の動き。人間が演じる以上に表現力が豊かです。
お菓子でもつまみながら気軽に見る、というDVDではありません。いつのまにか身を乗り出して画面に見入ってしまっていた、という作品集です。
日本にはまだまだ素晴らしいアニメーションがあることを、もっとたくさんの人に知って欲しいと思います。
