　コロンビアの「ウェスタンｂｏｘ」をこれだけ観たくて求めた。
是非この単品発売の機会に一人でも多くの人に観て欲しいから書きます。

干ばつに喘ぐテキサス。牧場に水を引きたくても資金繰りで困り果てている牧場主。
彼は捕まえる手助けをした駅馬車強盗のボスの護送をかってでる。
手下の強盗団を警戒し列車の走る街までたどり着く。
ユマ行き３時１０分発。　　これに乗れば一安心。
隠れたホテルで発車時刻を待つ牧場主にボスは甘い声でささやく。　
「俺を逃がせ。一生稼げない大金をはらうぞ」
時にはじわりじわりと諭すように脅しをかける。　　
「俺の部下がこのまま見逃すと思うか。間もなくここを突き止めるぞ」
牧場主の心は揺れる。やがてボスを見つけた手下はホテルを包囲する。　
　せまる列車の時刻。

「ユマで待つ人もいない。それでも行かねばならない」
フランキー・レインが哀愁のメロディを歌い上げる。
牧場主に「シェーン」のバン・ヘフリン。ボスにグレン・フォード。
これ以上の適役は考えられない名作だ。

デルマー・ディヴィスの作品をあまり観たことがありませんでした。しかし、これからは観ないといけないと思わせるほどその手腕に引き込まれました。モノクロ撮影の素晴らしいこと。風景や人物がたたずむ空間の奥行き、さりげなくダイナミックなカメラの使用など全てが真新しく目をみはるほど。加えて俳優の使い方の素晴らしいこと。そして台詞がなくともさまざまなことが伝わってくる小道具の使い方やシュチュエーション作りのうまさ・・・。西部劇監督としてまさに一級です。

主演二人の素晴らしさ。グレン・フォードは総じて薄味であり、あまり好きな役者ではないのですが、どことなく軽薄な雰囲気が本編の飄々とした悪党にぴったり。にやけながら囚われの身からの脱出をあれこれ企てるあたり、一筋縄ではいかない屈折した魅力を感じました。対するヴァン・へフリンもいい。普段は手堅い助演者というイメージが強い彼ですが、ここでは儲け役を得て存分に活躍。犯罪者の護送などに関わりたくは無いが、家計のため、妻のため、子供たちのため、そしては己の誇りのためにやりとげようと苦悩する平凡な牧場主を哀歓いっぱいに力演。この二人の個性と演技が相まってまるで美しい化学反応をおこしたかのように映画全体をひっぱります。「ガンファイトが少ない」などという風評もなんのそのという感じで、奥行きのある心理ドラマを堪能できます。

フランキー・レインの歌う哀愁漂う主題歌も、これまたいい。そしてそれが適所に配されていて場面を盛り上げます。名曲と言えどこれだけ使われてしまったら飽きがくるのではないかとも思ってしまうのです。が、しかしそれがないところ、ディヴィス監督の手腕をここにも感じます。

このように、総じて素晴らしい『決断の３時10分』。ひょんなことから掘り出し物を見つけたあとに味わえる心地よい快感に今まさに浸っているところです。

ラッセルクロウ版を北米版で観てオリジナル観ましたがどちらも涙がとまりません。新作のほうにはベンフォスター扮するサイコな部下出てきます。ちなみにバンへフリンやった役をクリスチャンベール、グレンフォードがやった役をラッセルクロウやってました。
