   30年代。製作途中の映画を打ち切られそうになった監督デナムは、映画を完成させるため＆今までにない冒険映画を撮るため、海図にも載ってない“髑髏島”を目指す。だがそこは死に絶えたはずの恐竜や巨大昆虫、巨大なゴリラ（コング）が住んでいる島だった。しかも女優のアンが原住民にさらわれ、コングの生け贄にされてしまうのだった……。
   ピーター・ジャクソン監督が情熱のありったけを注ぎ込んで33年製作の同名映画をリメイク。愛情を込めすぎて、リアリティ重視なのかエンターテインメントとして描きたいのか、わからなくなるような視点のブレは正直否めない。でも約3時間の上映時間を釘づけにさせてしまうのはさすがジャクソン監督。平気で人をぶん投げ、恐竜を拳で殴り倒すが、愛する者に対しては心優しい“野獣”なコングも魅力的。（横森文）

5.0 out of 5 stars ビビって、たじろぐ高画質!, 2007/8/20
次世代DVD発売当初、「Blu-rayよりHD-DVDの方がクオリティが高い」と、マニアや評論家の間で囁かれました。全体的にHD-DVD陣営はスタートからクオリティの高い作品を投入し、逆にBlu-rayはロンチタイトルのクオリティが低かったのが原因ですが、もう一つはHD-DVD版「キングコング」の圧倒的なクオリティの高さでした。特にジャングル等、自然の階調表現(特に明暗部分)が素晴らしい。しかし、BD陣営も「パイレーツオブカリビアン」等の超高画質ソフトを投入し始め、巻き返しを測っています。一般論を言えば、規格は統一された方がいいのかも知れません。しかし、個人的には2規格位ならこのまま競い会ってとことんクオリティ合戦してもらいたいと思うのは不謹慎でしょうか…?(笑)

リメーク作品には、作り手にオリジナルに対する愛情がないと、ファンもがっかりしてしまうものである。このキングコングでは作り手の心が伝わってくるので、リメーク作品として合格である。画質に関してはＤＶＤ版が良かったので、ＨＤ　ＤＶＤにはそれほど期待はしていなかったが、いざ見始めるとその高画質に驚いた。これは、映画としても勿論お勧めだが、ＨＤ　ＤＶＤの力を見せつけたという意味で革命的な１枚だと思う。ぜひ、この作品をご覧になってＨＤ　ＤＶＤの素晴らしさを味わってもらいたい。

キングコングがHDDDVDで発売されたことは嬉しく思う。個人的にはコストが安くでき、データの劣化も少ないHDDVDが普及してくれたらと思っている。データ量はBlu-rayに比べて少ないがハイビジョンに対応させるなら十分だろう。キングコングはディレクターカット版が発売されているのに今回は通常版であるのが残念。Blu-ray Discで発売されたキングダム・オブ・ヘブンはディレクターカット版だったのに・・。Blu-ray DiscとHDDが競争しているが、消費者にとっては迷惑な話だ。VHSやLDの例を見てもいずれどちらかに淘汰されてしまうのだから怖くて手が出せない、早く規格が1本化して欲しい。
