美しき日本舞踊家元への愛の為に犯罪を重ねるガス人間を
土屋嘉男が好演。東宝特撮の隠れたメインアクターたる彼の
ベストワークであり、本多猪四郎の最高傑作。
そして大げさでなく、まるでギリシャ悲劇のように破滅的な
結末を迎える、この異形のラヴストーリーに説得力を与えて
いるのは、若き八千草薫の冷酷なまでの美貌なのだ。

ようやく再販されますね。

これは凄い映画です。
怪奇作品の体裁をとっていますが、実は
誰からも祝福されない、悲恋の物語です。
世界に類を見ない、特撮映画の最高傑作と言えるでしょう。

星いつつじゃ足りませんよ。
この傑作を称揚するには。

形式上の主人公・岡本警部補が捜査を行っている序盤はやや退屈。
しかし中盤、捜査中に少し会話しただけの一脇役と思われていた水野が
真の主人公＝ガス人間として名乗りを上げてから一気にテンションが上がっていく。
他人を犠牲にしても自己の欲求を満たそうとする誰もが持ちうるエゴイズム。
個々のエゴを抑制するための社会ルールを飛び越えていけるだけの力を持ったゆえの悲劇。
不死に近い肉体、無敵に近い能力、そこから生じる空虚感、孤独感を埋めるために
水野は落ちぶれた踊りの家元・藤千代を盛り立てることに己の存在意義を求める。
（「君は僕をうんと利用すれば良いんだ」と言い切る場面は清々しささえ感じる）
しかし水野が藤千代に貢ぎ肩入れするほど、二人は社会から孤立していく。
ガス人間が対峙する敵は興味本位で劇場に押しかける群集に象徴される社会そのもの。
本来、主役であるはずの岡本など彼の眼中には全く無い。
最後は一時の勝利に喜ぶ水野に対し、その先の絶望を見ている藤千代が悲劇の幕を引く。
結末の壮絶さたるや昨今の怪獣映画など全く比較にならない。
