この映画を観たのは、20年くらい前、レンタルで。ずっと気になる作品でした。ナチス占領下にもかかわらず、マルセル・カルネ監督が三年の歳月を費やし完成させた、二部構成、三時間をこえる大作。歴代洋画ベストテンに必ず挙げられ、邦題の神々しさもあり、何か敷居が高く感じられたのです。しかし、映画の幕が開くとすぐにその世界に引き込まれました。19世紀半ばのパリ、天井桟敷席までスズナリの劇場や、見世物小屋等が立ち並ぶ界隈が舞台。「恋なんて簡単よ」と言う、誰にも束縛されない自由な女ガランス、全てをパントマイムで表現出来るが、大切な思いを伝えられない男バチスト、言葉巧みに恋と成功を手に入れようとする俳優ルメートル、ガランスとの恋に破れたバチストと結婚する、凡庸な女ナタリー、悪党ラスネール、大富豪モントレー伯爵。この映画が描くのは登場人物たちの人間模様であり、現在にも通じる愛憎絵巻なのです。そしてラストシーン、「これが人生なんだ」、そして「これこそ映画なんだ」と… 。 この度DVDで、久しぶりに観たのだけど、やはり深いです。台詞がまたいい。この作品を映画館で観てみたい、と思うのは私だけではないでしょう。つまるところ『天井桟敷の人々』とはスズナリの私たちなのかも知れません。

初めて「天井桟敷の人々」を見たのは２０年前。キネマ旬報のオールタイムベストで一位キープし続け、私たちの年代の映画好きは永らく観る機会が無く、悔しい思いをしてきました。ビデオの普及で幻の映画が気軽に観る事ができるようになり、やっと見る事ができました。観終わったあと一位キープも十分納得しました。フランスの小説に言う「ロマン=長編」の風格を持った大作です。未だナチスドイツの占領下でありながら製作が開始され、コメディフランセーズの全面的な参加の元、こんな映画が製作された事を奇跡の様に思われます。この映画で語られる人間模様、恋愛は現在（いま）に通じるメンタリティーを有していると思います。古今亭志ん生の人情噺に通じる人間観の確かさを映画の中から読み取る事も可能でしょう。古いフランス映画の入門としてはもっと軽やかな作品の方が良いと思われますが、いずれは観て欲しい名作だと思います。

一人の美女をめぐる男たちの恋の鞘当(だけではありませんが)、今はなきパリの犯罪大通りを舞台にした最後は切ない気持ちになる恋愛映画であります。この美女は決して若くはないけれど、目尻のちょっとした翳りさえも美しさを際立たせてあまりあるものがあります。もちろん見た目の美しさだけではなく洒落た言葉のやりとりもさすが!(フランス語の美しさが発揮されてマス)という感じであります。愛しているとわかっていても別れていくしかないという最後のシーンには涙・涙なのであります。ずっと探していてやっと見つけて大変満足しております。(惜しむらくはカバーのセンスが…中身がきちんとはいっているのでこれには目をつぶります)
