　この映画を初めて観た時の興奮は、今もよく憶えている。東京タワー下に仮設された銀色ドームのお世辞にも快適とは言えない、しかし良い意味で見世物小屋の様な空間の中で、この魔可不思議なアート・フィルムに出逢ったのだ。怪奇幻想映画そのままに、現世とあの世、現実と妄想が混沌とする展開。日本的なしっとりとした風情の中で蔓延する西洋的な頽廃美。生々しいエロティシズム。腐りかけの熟れた水密桃。蟹や斑点に代表される強烈な赤の色彩感覚。原田芳雄の豪放奔放さと藤田敏八の良い意味での素人臭さ。大谷直子の豊艶さに大楠道代の妖艶さ。狂言回しの３人の乞食。そして、劇中垣間聴こえる鈴木清順の合いの手、、、。正に、身体の五感を触発させる様な面白さにハマって、以後何度か見直しているのだが、極めて豊潤で刺激的な奇蹟美と自由闊達なそのイマジネーションに感嘆しながらも、今以って謎の多い、それ故にカルト的な魅力を放ち、燦然と光り輝いていると思える大傑作。先日刊行されたワイズ出版の「清順映画」の中で、“この映画の登場人物の生死は、どこで分かれているのかはっきりしないが。”とのインタビュアーの質問に答え、清順監督曰く、“これは怪奇映画だから、理屈じゃないんだよ。”、、、恐れ入りました（笑）。綽綽と答えられているのがさすがです。

この映画に出てくる女優さんたちはなんとも綺麗です。太陽の下で遠慮会釈なく育った今時の「タレントさん」にはない妖しさと蔭りが魅力的。着物の袖をたくし上げた時に覗く腕の「骨」の透明感にははっとします。蒟蒻、お碗の舟、上がり框。監督はありとあらゆる小物を駆使して日本人の五感に訴える。全編ゆらゆらと島国日本の湿り気が立ち上る。これを美しい工芸品って呼んだ高名な方がいるのですが、そうでしょうか？これは狂気を秘めた芸術品と私には思えます。おまけによく見ると辛口のユーモアまで備えている。ヨーロッパのいかなる大芸術映画にも負けない素晴らしい作品だと思います。

いろいろ特典がありこの作品の監督出演者の裏はなしが聞けたり予告編も２本とも面白い。以前のものを処分して買い直したが期待にたがわなかった。
