アリソン・スタットン、サイモン・ブース、スパイクの3人による唯一のアルバム(82年作)。

今日、先にヤング･マーブル･ジャイアンツを聴き、そのあとウィークエンドを聴いた。
ヤング〜をニューウェイヴだと感じ、ウィークエンドは、ネオアコだと感じるはずだった。
しかし、どうやらその解釈はちょっと間違っていたようだ。
ウィークエンドも、ボサなどを匂わせながらも、どこを切ってもニューウェイヴだったというのが、僕の今の見解だ。それは、どちらもメロディや音色を楽しむというより、その方法論を楽しむべきものだという意味でニューウェイヴだと思った。ヤング〜が出来る限り簡素な音で、モノクロの世界を目指したように、ウィークエンドでは、ボサなどのラテンミュージックをいかに平板にやれるかに挑戦しているかのようだ。もし本当はそうでなかったとしても、僕にはとても実験的に感じた。そして、アリソンの淡々とした歌声を聴いていると、静かにヤング〜が浮かび上がってくるのが分かった。
つまり、彼らはネオアコ20選とかに選ばれてはいるが、いわゆる初期のアズテックやオレンジジュースとは別物の音楽であるということだ。彼らの音楽からは、青春の甘酸っぱさみたいなものを感じ取ることはないと思う。彼らの音楽は、もっとデザイン的で、ポップアートに近い。そうそれは、ニューヨークパンクのテレビジョンやトーキング･ヘッズに近い。
ロンドンパンクが閉塞感を示したとき、ある種のイギリスのバンドは、ニューヨークへと先祖帰りをしていたのだ。
