　楽曲、演奏、ジャケットに至るまで（笑）とにかくこのアルバムはスティングの最高傑作。エリック・クラプトンなどゲストも注目なのだが、それを抜きにしてもものすごいクオリティを誇っている名作。ロックとかジャズとかポップスとかそういったジャンルに縛られず、自由で開放的な、それでいて適度な緊張感をも感じさせる彼の音楽は本当に素晴らしい。このアルバムからはシングル・ヒットもかなり生まれたのだが、それらのＰＶも頻繁にオン・エアされていたのを思い出す。中でも「イングリッシュマン・イン・ニューヨーク」は、かなり強烈な印象だった。聴けば聴くほど深みの増す、最高にレベルの高いアルバムだ。

本作の発売当時にLPを買った．中途半端な収録時間ゆえ，2枚組で片面が15分程度で，そのくせしっかりLP2枚分の値段(4,000円くらい)だったという，まさに殿様商売バリバリの作品だった．まあ，そのくらいの金を出して買っても後悔しなかった名作だったのはたしかだと思う．

私見では，Stingの魅力は大きく分けて3つ．一つは，The Police時代から同じみのレゲエをはじめとして，パンク，カリプソ，スカ，サルサ，フォルクローレ，クラシックまでも含む幅広く，奥行きのある音楽性．2つめは，自分の音楽のベースがジャズにあることをしっかりと意識しながら，オリジナリティのある音づくりができたこと．Branford Marsalisを常に相棒とし，Manu KatcheやVinnie Colaiutaなど，様々なリズムに柔軟に対応できる手練を選び抜いているところに，彼の音づくりへのこだわりが表れている．3つめは，詞．社会問題を取り上げたような曲を，あまりお目にかからないような小難しい言葉をこねくりまわして，「おまえらこういうことを知っているか」とでも言わんばかりに歌う一方で，"We'll be together" (前作の"(If you love somebody) set them free"のアンサーソング)のように，スノッブさも醸し出す．音楽をとおして人間の多面性を体現していた数少ないアーティスト．同時期のビートたけしと重なる．

1つ1つの曲に込められたエピソードの濃密さは，20年以上洋楽を聴いてきた中で他に類をみないと言える．特に，Jimi Hendrixの"Little wing"のカバーはすごい．この曲を十八番にしてきた故Gil Evansのバンドとの共演だが，Hiram Bullockのギター，Kenwood Dennardのドラムス，Mark Eganのベースを中心として，アレンジにさらに磨きがかけられていて，ただただ素晴らしい．この快感と切なさに，Jimi Hendrixの音楽の本質が反映されていると言ってもいいのではないか．

このカバー曲もそうだが，随所にシェークスピアやクラシックといった昔の作品の援用がある．彼は，自分のオリジナリティが，先達の上に依って成り立っていることを知っていた．そういうことも，本作のカラーに効いていると言えるでしょう．

Stingを聴きたい，と思ったら，まず本作である．是非．
