オリジナル10曲のうち半分がヒット性という分厚い構成が当時のポリスの充実ぶりをうかがわせる。#1、#6、#8で心地よいスピード感を楽しんだかと思えば、#2、#7といったゆったりと展開する曲でリラックスさせてくれたりと音楽的な懐の広さが心にくいばかりに作られている。スタン、スタンと聞こえる硬調なドラムが刻む乾いたリズムやスティングのかすれ気味なくせにどこか孤高の響きを感じさせるボーカルなど、POLICEらしさが高い次元で結晶したイメージだ。本アルバムを聴くことで、POLICEが時代を代表するグループだったことが再認識できるだろう。年月を越えて楽しめるアルバム、いわゆる名盤のひとつだ。POLICEファンだけに留まらずロック・ファンを標榜するなら一度は聞いて欲しい。

祝再結成!来日公演も決定したザ・ポリス。彼らの事実上のラストアルバムにして最高傑作と言われているのが本作『シンクロニシティー』なのです。リリースからもうすぐ四半世紀が経とうとは…。レコードで言うA面は、ユング心理学をモチーフにし、タイトル曲を中心にアバンギャルドに展開したコンセプトサイド、B面は大ヒットシングル「見つめていたい」を筆頭に叙情的なナンバーを配している。この流れは、かのビートルズの事実上のラストアルバム『アビー・ロード』にも通ずるわけで…。 なにはともあれ、全く色褪せていません。未だ新鮮なキモチで聴くことができる名盤です。ライヴでもここからのナンバーが多数演奏されることは必至です。因みに、ラストに追加されてる「マーダー・バイ・ナンバーズ」(スティング作詞、アンディ作曲)はなかなか味わい深い。ラストナンバー「サハラ砂漠でお茶を」の余韻に充分浸った後、アンコールとして聴いてみてください。

このアルバムを初めて聞いたのが高校生のころ。確かＭ．ジャクソンの「スリラー」や「フラッシュダンス」がヒットしていたときである。そのとき、ポリスのこのアルバムを聞いて「かっこよさ」にやられてしまった。イントロのベースの音が印象的の名曲「見つめていたい」は今でも好きな曲のベスト３に入っている。（スティングがウッドベースを弾くミュージックビデオもかっこよかった。）そのほかにも「シンクロニシティ」や「キングオブペイン」など印象深く、かっこいい曲が並んでいる。高校生のとき、少ない小遣いをためてＬＰを買ったが、ＣＤも購入してしまった。しかし、今聞いてもすばらしいアルバムだと胸を張っていえる名盤だ。「アビーロード」を作り解散したビートルズ、「明日にかける橋」を作って解散したＳ＆Ｇと同じように、ポリスも活動停止になってしまった。こんなアルバムを作ってしまったら、このアルバムを超えるアルバムは作れないから仕方がないかもしれない。
