ポリスの第2段。音楽記者だったスティングが既存の音楽に飽き足らず、ポリスというバンドを作って衝撃のデビューをした次の作品だが、音楽的に充実度を増しているように思える。レビュー・タイトルは当時の日本の音楽評論家がマジで記事に書いたもの。

「Message In a Bottle」は題名通り、歌詞に込められたメッセージ性が凄まじい。訳者が「孤独」という言葉を使ったのもうなづける。あるチャリティ・コンサート(シークレット・ポリスマンズ・コンサート、各アーティストがアコースティック演奏をするのがウリ)の録音版を持っているが、ギター一本で本曲を唄うスタイルによって余計歌詞が染み渡るようだった。「Bring on the Night」も印象に残る佳曲。「Walking on the Moon」はシンセサイザーなしに、あの浮遊感を出す演奏力、構想力に感心させられる。そして、凝った作りでありながら聴く者に親近感を感じさせる辺り感服する。「The Bed's Too Big Without You」は一人寝の寂しさを痛切に感じさせる哀感溢れる曲。

ギター、ベース、ドラムスだけのシンプルな構成なのに、陰影に富んだ曲を次々と産みだすポリスは本当に素晴らしい。孤高のようでいながら、決して聴く者を突き放していない姿勢も好ましい。ポリスの初期を代表する傑作アルバム。

『白いレガッタ』… タイトルの真意は解りませんが、いつもポリスのメンバーが三人用ボートを漕いでいる姿を連想してしまう。自分の想像力の貧困さを嘆くばかりですが、タイトル曲や「死の誘惑」等のアンサンブルや演奏力を耳にすると、あながち外れているとも思えません。スティングのボーカルと個性が際立っているようにも感じますが、アンディのテクニカルなギターワーク、スチュワートの的確かつ多彩なドラム、勿論、忘れちゃいけないスティングの印象的なベース。正に、絶妙なトライアングル。正に、三人漕ぎ用ボート(やっぱり違和感あるな…)と言えます。機会があれば、そんな彼らの演奏を堪能できるライヴ盤や映像も手にして貰いたいのですが、まずは本作。彼らの第二作目なのですが、既に、ここでその音楽性が完成しています。そして演奏力のみならず、 「孤独のメッセージ」、 「ブリング・オン・ザ・ナイト」、「ひとりぼっちの夜」等、楽曲のレベルも高く、風格すら漂っているアルバムなのです。 さて、ロック界屈指のグループ「ポリス」の最高傑作は第五作『シンクロニシティー』なのは間違いないですが、スリー・ピース・バンド「ポリス」としてのそれは本作『白いレガッタ』だと言い切ってしまいましょう。裏ジャケの「ALL NOISES BY THE POLICE」のクレジットが、そんな彼らの自信を表しているように思えます。

数々の洋楽アルバムの中でも抜きん出て一番大好きなアルバムです。とにかく捨て曲一切無し!どれも素晴らしい!
洗練尽くされたサウンドでありながら、シンプルでストレート。ノリの良い曲ばかりで、テーマ性も深い。
『孤独のメッセージ』は世界で大ヒットしているだけあってその曲の展開が圧巻。『イッツ・オールライト・フォーユー』は軽快なリズムで気軽に聴けるし、『ブリング・オン・ザ・ナイト』のレゲエチックなノリに踊りたくなる仕上がり。とにかく一聴瞭然なので、つべこべ言わず聴くべし。
ちなみにライブバージョンの『ブリング・オン・ザ・ナイト』はマジでカッコイイです!YouTubeでチェック!
