Ｕ２のアルバムは数あれど、この時代が一番パワーがあったように思う。
アルバム全体を通して感じて欲しいのはその音楽の多様性。
それは、詰まるところ「Ｕ２の歩いて来た足跡」そのものである。
２曲目にはギタリスト：エッジによるボーカルも聴くことが出来る。
ゴスペル教会でのコラボレーションに、ＢＢキングとのブルースセッション。
ロックも、ハードなものから、スローなものまでと、実に多様。
音楽性の深さ広さも感動的だが、１曲１曲の持つ「響くもの」こそ感じて欲しい。
とにかくこの時期のＵ２は非常にかっこいいのだ。
スタイルがそもそも渋く、若い時代とは思えないほどにクールである。
ライブ音源・スタジオ音源の混合という珍しいアルバム構成も目玉だが、
そういう難しいことは置いておいても楽しめる作品の数々が並ぶ。
Ｕ２が生み出した独特の音楽性の数々を感じることの出来るこのアルバムは、
ぜひ聞いて欲しい１作となっている。

スタジオ収録版とライブ版の混合、他のアーティストの曲の採録、2枚組等U2としては異色のアルバム。最も充実していた頃の作品だけに内容も素晴らしい。

冒頭の「Helter Skelter」は無論ビートルズのカバーだが、ビートルズのメンバもアイルランド移民系なので親近感があるのかもしれない。「Van Diemen's Land」は囚人の島を歌ったもので哀切感が胸に迫る。「All Along The Watchtower」もB.ディランのカバーで、多くのアーティストに取り上げられる曲だが、原曲の荒削りな部分を活かしながらU2特有の鋭さが光り秀逸。「Heartland」は理想の土地を夢想した歌で心に響くものがある。「I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For」はU2の代表作であるが、本アルバムの中で聴くと拡がりを持ったサウンドの素晴らしさが余計際立つ。

この他、シングル・ヒット曲も多く収められているが、私が一番驚いたのは「God Part II」である。「ジョンに捧げる」との添え書きがあり、ジョンに対するボノの想いが伝わる。歌詞も原曲を活かしながら、本作発表当時の社会、音楽界に対する皮肉が込められており卓越した出来栄え。

当時のU2の充実ぶりを見事に発揮したまさに「魂の叫び」が聴こえて来る傑作アルバム。

私は、初期U2が、大好きである。決して、今のU2が嫌いな訳ではない。彼らは今でも、素晴らしい音楽を造り続ける、素晴らしいアーティストである。それでも、やっぱり初期U2が、大好きである。この時期の彼らの音楽には、彼ら以外の誰にも表現できない、ある意味、独特な《魔法》のような力があった。今、このアルバムを聴いても、その《魔法》の力を、強く感じる。今のU2も好きだけど、初期U2は私にとって、やっぱり《別格》の存在です。
