　現在はアンビエントで幻想的な作風を歩むデヴィッド・シルヴィアン。しかしここで聴けるのは、1980年代を先取りした、極めてキャッチーな音である。原題「Adolescent Sex」。シルヴィアン本人は、「30秒以内で歌に入れ、などレコード会社に強制された」と語り、特に 1st. に対し、厳しい発言をしている。

　しかし、自分はキャッチーで良いメロディーがたくさんある、このアルバムが一番好きだ。とにかく分かり易いし、あっという間に覚えられる旋律は、ポップ・ミュージックに欠かせない要素である。

　メーターを見ると、実は30秒では歌に到達していない（笑）、オープニングの「Transmission/魅惑への招待」からして、並のバンドに作れる曲じゃない。低音ながら素晴らしく上手く、歯切れの良いヴォーカル。ヴォーカルが低い分、高音にキーボードを配置した演奏は、それまであまりなかったものだ。

　ブロンドでルックスも良く、後にアニメ「MONSTER」オリジナルサウンドトラックでエンディングを歌ったことから、「ヨハン」にも例えられる彼。「日本」というバンド名から、何度となく来日し、関係は今も深い。

　セクシーで魅力的な楽曲。メディアを思わせる近代的な言葉を効果的に使った歌詞。1970年代終わりの録音とは、とても信じられない素晴らしい音質のアルバムでもあり、今改めて愛聴している。たまにはこの頃の曲も演奏して欲しいな。

その後、完成度を高めていくことになるJAPANの音楽性を語る時、問題外とばかりに扱われがちな初期の彼等、アリオラハンザ時代の作品です。でも、実は私はギラギラしてた頃のこのアルバムが一番好き。確かに「ブリキの太鼓」とか、彼等独自の世界を確立している名盤だとは思う。だけど、ああいった音楽性はその後フォロワーと思われるバンドが全然出てこない事もあるけど、なんか馴染めないと言うか、凄い良く出来てるのはわかるけど、聴いてて眠くなる。ロックファンとして聴いてて感覚的に面白いのは断然こっち。黒いリズムと妖しい電子音はクセになる味。特に"SuburbanLove"と"Television"はもう最高にcool!デビッドの声もセクシーでカッコよすぎる。デビシル、こんなにカッコ良かったのに、何であんなにこの頃の自分を否定するんだろうねー。どんどん、一人で別世界に行っちゃって、今じゃ仙人みたい。つまんないなー。そう思ってるジャパンのファンは、私だけじゃないはずなんだけどね。

　むかぁしのJAPANってこんなグラムロックだったんだぁ。。。
今のデヴィドシルビアンからは想像つかないものです。
彼及び彼のお友達，兄弟の反抗期の作品と乱暴に言ってしまって
よいでしょうか。
　今の彼の枯れっぷりを成熟と呼ぶならば，まさにこれはこれは
反抗期のでびしるです。
