　ロックというジャンルが、８０年代半ばぐらいでワン・サイクルを終えたこと自体は否定できない。それ以降は、真に先鋭的な作品はそうは多くない苦しい状態が続いている。そうした中、周知の通り、ブルーズやＲ＆Ｒを現代的に解釈したバンドや、ベースレスのバンドが優れた作品を発表している。ブルーズ・エクスプロージョンやホワイト・ストライプスらの先鋭性はいうまでもない。
　実は、近年のロックには必ずしも詳しくないので、ブラック・キーズのこともよく知らなかった。あのディーヴォと同じアクロン出身の、ｖｏ＋ｇ、ｄｓの二人組。本作が既に４枚目である。結論をいえば、前述のバンド達と同様、ロック・ミュージックのアンサンブルがマンネリ化しつつある中、実に格好良い演奏を実現している。非常に生々しい録音で、まるでその場にいるようだ。ｇやｄｓの細かい音まで聴こえてくる。ブルーズをベースとし、ミディアム・テンポのヘヴィーなナンバーが多い。ｂがいないのに、却って、かつてのロックの刺激がよみがえってくる感があるのも上記のバンドらと同じで、興味深い。
　ベースレスという編成は、近年の私が聴いている先鋭的ジャズでは、個人的に大好きなＰ・モチアン・トリオなどを初めとして決して珍しくはない。通常、ｂはｇやｋｅｙとｄｓをつなぐ役目を果たす。ｂがいないと、当然ながら一種の不安定さが増す。だが、逆に、それを補おうとして、微細なところで新たな感覚が生まれてくる。他方、敢えて不安定さを放置し、それを新しい表現とする局面も出てくる。このバンドがＷ・ストライプスぐらいまでになるかどうかはともかく、近年のロックでは最も優れた演奏の一つだと思う。
