今ではほとんど忘れられた感のあるハワード・ジョーンズですが、1stとなるこのアルバムの輝きが失せることは永遠にないでしょう。このアルバム、実のところ８０年代を代表するエレクトリック・ポップ/テクノの名盤で重圧でいかにも英国という伝統を踏まえながらポップであるという文句のつけようもない作品です。ややヴォーカルに難がありますが、同時期に活躍するこの手のアーティストの作品とは一つも２つも抜きん出たクオリティを持ち説得力があります。ヘッド・セットのマイクを付けて歌いながらキーボードを操る姿が印象的で個人的にも子供の頃のアイドルの一人だった人ですが、そういったこと以上に曲がキャッチーでメロが良いというのが魅力でした。アルバムにはこの時代の名曲が目白押しですが、ＣＭなどでも有名な、New Song、重圧な、What is Love、パールと貝殻あたりは聴いたことがあるのでは？どさくさですが、それらを含んだ１２インチ盤、１２”ＥＲＳの再発を熱望しています。

83年のベストヒットCDでニュー・ソングをよく聴いていますが，いまだに古さを感じない良い曲です。

84年ころに来日した際に，当時放映されていた11PMという番組に出演し，カメラを贈呈されたのですが，
番組内で裸のおねーさんが出てきたことに憤慨し，カメラを突き返して帰ってしまったというエピソード
を思い出します。(私は当日の11PMは観ていなくて，その顛末はFM雑誌で読みました。)
トウモロコシ頭などと言われ，音楽も当時の先端であったせいか，やや色物的な扱いを(日本では)受けて
いましたが，本人は大変真面目な人であるようですね。

これから購入してitunes→iPodでドライブミュージックにします。

シンセを一人で弾いて、歌も歌ってというスタイルが印象的で、そんな部分ばかり注目され気味であったように思いますが、彼の作る曲はとても良いものばかりです。まさに天才メロディメーカー。
　アレンジを変えて普通のバンド編成で演奏しても、非常に魅力的。良い曲はどんなふうに演奏しても輝きを失わないのだと思います。ポップのスタンダードと言ってもよいような爽快でキャッチーな曲が満載のアルバム。こんな素晴らしいアルバムも一時は廃盤の憂き目にあっていたのですが、もうそんなことになってほしくないですね。レコード会社は、目先の利益にばかり飛びついて、ただ目新しいというだけの、クソみたいな音楽ばかり垂れ流すばかりでなく、良い音楽を求めている大人がいることも忘れないで欲しいですね。
