高校時代に初めて聴いたときの驚きはかなりのものであった。無伴奏ドラム・ソロの曲などありえるのかというのが本音の感想であった。ただマックス･ローチというドラマーがモダンジャズエイジのきわめて重要なドラマーであることは知っていたし、このアルバムで重要な実験が展開されていることは容易に感じ取れた。しかしながらそこにはドラムの実験だけでなく構成されたドラムの曲があり、なによりもそこにはメロディが感じられた。無彩色のデッサンにも色を感じるようにローチーのドラミングの音の持つメロディックな響には背筋がゾクゾクさせられたのだ。ドラム・オルソー・ワルツ、限りなきドラムがそれだ。一方フレディ･ハバードらが参加した通常の演奏では、華やかな演奏とドラムのリズムの多彩さが強調され違った意味でローチの個性が感じられた。特にジェームズ・スポロディングのアルト・サックスが自然発生的なソロを展開し、魅力をたたえていた。逆説的ではあるが、端正で正確無比なローチのドラミングは心憎いまでに計算しつくされた唄があり、わくわくさせる情熱を感じるのだ。
