ニール・ヤング&クレイジー・ホースのファンは長年に渡り、最初のリーダーだったダニー・ウィットンのいるクレイジー・ホースのライヴを公式に聴けるチャンスを待っていた。ウィットンはずば抜けた才能を持っていたギタリストだったが、1972年後半にヘロインの過剰摂取で死亡、『Tonight's the Night』は彼を悼んで作られたものだ。流行に敏感なファンたちは少なくとも12年はこのセットリストを待っていたことになる。元々は3枚組のアウトテイク集『Decade』の最後に収録されることになっていたからだ。ありがたいことに、悪名高いフィルモア・イーストからの録音状態のよいライヴ・セットは待った甲斐があった。焼けつくような長いテイクの「Down by the River」、「Winterlong」、「Cowgirl in the Sand」が収録され、どの曲も恐ろしくすばらしいギターのインタープレイに駆り立てられていて、つい何度も巻き戻して聴いてしまう。実際、これはリチャード・ロイドとトム・ヴァーレインがバンドのテレヴィジョンでおこなったかけ合いを予見しているように思える。ただ柔らかなエッジが足りないだけだ。だが、世界はヤングが元祖パンクだという議論をもはや必要としていない。世界が求めているのはニールのアーカイヴから少なくとも12枚のリリースだ! そしてありがたいことに、この最高のライヴ・アルバムで水門が本当に開かれ、ディランの『Bootleg』シリーズのようにさらなるアルバムが登場することになっている。このアルバムは「Wondering」だけでも価値がある。ずっと後になってニールの妙な80年代のロカビリー時代になるまで、公式にはレコーディングされていなかった曲だ。--Mike McGonigal

長い間、本当に長い間待たれていたものは、こういった初期の音源です。それもライヴの。もちろん今のが悪いって言うのではないけれど、往年の輝きを知っているだけにここは手放しで喜びたい。
　この次にはトロントのマッシィホールでの ライヴも出る。そして、今年末頃には８枚組みのＣＤプラスＤＶＤのセットも発表と言う。
　とにかく前向きな人である。困るぐらい。新作を出すと決めたら、前作がどんなものであったのか、前作からどれくらいインターバルがあるのかなど関係なしにドンドン思いのとおり新作を発表する人である（またそんなことができる人でもある）。
　それだけに、今回こうして珍しく後ろを向いて過去の音源を出すには多いに考えるところがあるのだと思う。そういった意味では、こういったアーカイヴモノをはさんでの新作も楽しみである。それにしてもすごい人である。そしてすごいアーカイヴモノだ。

今日購入して、１回目聴きながらのライヴ・レヴューする☆予想通り、いやそれ以上、こいつは凄いや！先ず“Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown”から聴く☆「今宵その夜」と同じヴァージョンかな？（ちょっと違うぞ）☆ダニー・ウィッテンもニールも最高にカッコいい☆ジョエル・バーンスタインの同じくらいイカした内側の写真ほど彼らの雄姿を上手く捉えたショットはないだろう☆ダニーの笑顔とニールの表情とが対照的なのもイイ☆次は“Cowgirl In The Sand”の１５分に及ぶ怒涛のバンドサウンド（ビリー・タルボットの骨太ベースラインにも注目！）にノックアウトされる☆演奏後にステージ終了を告げるために微音で流れるジェイムズ・テイラーの“Sweet Baby James”が、‘ここがどこでもない’場所ではなく、確かに１９７０のフィルモア・イーストであることを証明している〆

ＣＤ屋さんで、試聴すると、すぐにあのニールのへろへろの声にやられて、買ってしまった。
ロックに夢中になった頃を思い出し、聴いている自分の身体が音符になって、
弾けてしまいそうなロックの魅力のコアがここにあるライヴです。
