   時は幕末、庄内・海坂藩の下級武士・片桐宗蔵（永瀬正敏）は、かつて自分の家に奉公していたきえ（松たか子）が嫁入り先で虐げられていることを知り、その身柄を預かった。しかし世間の目は冷たく、やがてきえは宗蔵のもとを去っていく。そんな折、謀反の罪で投獄されていた友人の弥一郎（小沢征悦）が脱獄。家老の堀（緒形拳）は、非情にも宗蔵にその征伐を命じた…。
   名匠・山田洋次監督が『たそがれ清兵衛』に続いて藤沢周平の時代劇小説を原作に取り組んだ時代劇。一見前作と似たドラマ展開だが、その実、前作よりも一歩踏み込んだ武家社会批判や、それに対する主人公たちの前向きな姿勢が汲み取れるものとなっており、娯楽的な要素もぐんと増えている。『男はつらいよ』を彷彿させる人間関係図も見え隠れするなど遊び心も多分で、また殺陣の非情なダイナミズムも今回の方が際立っている。永瀬の立ち回りも見事。前作の好評を受けて、さらなる進歩を遂げた傑作である。（的田也寸志）

下級武士の貧困と、生活を重点的に描いていた前作｢たそがれ清兵衛｣。

それとは趣を変えて今作では、下級武士と百姓の娘との身分違いの恋や、
タイトルにもある｢隠し剣｣による勧善懲悪、
群像劇による笑いなど、より娯楽色を強めています。

その辺りが、前作以上の評価を得られなかった理由かもしれませんが、
観て損はしない作品になっていると思います。

特にラストシーンは、さすが山田洋次監督、ぬくもりの感じられる名シーンです。

藤沢周平作品の映画化です。官僚機構の下位にいる下級武士の悲哀が良く出ている映画です。同門で学んだ同僚を藩命で斬らねばならないのは辛いところです。また、同時にサムライの魂というものを感じさせる映画です。家老の腐敗に対し、義憤により、隠し剣で暗殺します。まさに秒殺の技を見せます。ここら辺は、必殺仕掛け人のようでした。また、この映画では、藩が洋式砲術の導入をしているのですが、その様子も面白く描かれています。洋化せざる得ない日本社会の様子や受け入れがたい様子も描かれていました。果たし合いのシーンも最後は、鉄砲でしとめられ、主人公が嘆くシーンがありました。松たか子演じるきぬは可愛い女性として描かれていて魅力的ではありますが、古い時代の日本の女性像になっているのは、時代的に仕方のないところでしょう。ラストでは、主人公が武士を捨て、江戸に出て町人になり、きぬを一緒に連れていくというシーンになりますが、良いシーンではありますが、急に現代感覚の演出になってしまったのかなと感じました。それでも藤沢周平作品は面白いなと魅力を感じます。

たそがれ清兵衛もよかったけど、こちらも素晴らしいものでした。
日本の映画は心に訴えるものがある。洋画ばかり見ている人にも是非みてもらいたい。
