カラヤンのチャイコフスキーはどれも、ムラヴィンのと並ぶ最高峰の演奏だ。
冒頭のファンファーレはムラヴィンの60年盤に比べ幾分柔らかい印象だが、曲特有の激しさも見られる。主部は適切なテンポで進むが、ティンパニの強打が凄まじい（71年録音のEMI盤は更に狂絶）。ムラヴィンとはまた違った面白さがある。第二楽章は速めのテンポだが、ごく自然に歌わせているし、高揚感も素晴らしい。第三楽章もごく自然に流れ、終結部の高揚感も中々のものだ。フィナーレも速めのテンポで進むがアンサンブルが非常に丁寧で、安心して聴ける演奏。コーダの熱狂的な雰囲気も素晴らしい。

カラヤンの録音では、この後にウイーンフィルを振ったものがありますが、ベルフィルとの録音は、これが最後になります。
第４番はチャイコフスキーの交響曲の中では最も、古典的様式美を感じさせるものですが、この録音では、その特徴を踏まえた上での、精緻で統制のとれた演奏を聴く事ができます。

特に第１楽章は素晴らしいです。第１主題での、ため息と訴えの旋律は、弦楽器が奏でる正確なリズムをベースにして過度の感傷を抑えています。
第２主題も、あくまで正確なテンポに乗って、幻想的な木管楽器の短いフレーズが続いていきます。
コーダの弦楽器の激しいボーイングは大迫力です。まさに運命の手によって海の中に引きずり込まれていく感があります。
第４楽章も期待にたがわぬ、迫力ある演奏を楽しめます。

過度な感傷を抑えたこのＣＤは、交響曲を初めて聴きたいという人も含め、万人にお勧めできるものだと思います。
