録音当時シカゴ交響楽団の主席客演指揮者であったアバドが録音した数多い音楽の中でも、この＜幻想＞はトップクラスに位置するものであろう。
アバドはシカゴso.の名人芸を客席に向けて、この交響曲のモチーフ「アヘンによって生じたさまざまな覚醒作用」の‘疑似体験’を体験させるかのごとく、ダイナミックに操っているのがよくわかる。とりわけ動と静の切り替えが鮮やかであると同時に、細やかな静の部分に神経が行き届いている。
特に単独でもよく聞かれる第２楽章のなんと美しい音楽であることか、数ある演奏のなかでもこの楽章をこれほどにまで美しく仕上げたのはこの演奏だけであろう。
また、この第４楽章では主題部分が繰り返されていて、初めて聴くと「おや」と思われるかもしれないが、曲の展開上ごく自然な流れであり、むしろこのスタイルが正しく感じられる。第５楽章での最後へと続く盛り上げ方も見事だ。
この演奏全体を通じて言えることは、彼のミラノ・スカラ座での長年に渡るオペラ指揮の経験が、この曲をこうしたドラマチックな演奏へ昇華させたという事実である。
なお、この演奏は、評論家たちの選ぶ「ベストテン演奏」の本で長らくトップを維持してきたもの。これは名演奏であり、このことについて私は何も異論はない。

昔、よく聴いてましたが、この値段とは。

本当に、今のクラシック音楽ファンは恵まれている。

いわずと知れた、本曲の名演奏のひとつ。

わたしは広島生まれの広島育ちだが、この録音の「鐘の音」は、ヒロシマの平和の鐘の音を合成したものが使われていると聞いている。

発売当時、シカゴ響の客演指揮者だったアバドの名演。
フランス系の演奏ではなく純音楽としての幻想交響曲。
歌いまわしと、シカゴ交響楽団のアンサンブルはすばらしいです。
