　世界屈指のブラス・セクションを抱えた、シカゴ交響楽団の「惑星」。このオーケストラによる録音は（おそらく）現在唯一です。
　演奏は、レヴァインらしくストレートにオーケストラのパワーを生かした痛快なもの。とくにブラス・セクションの鳴りはかなりのものですが、やはり何種類かの「惑星」を聴いてきた人にとっては細部のアラが目立つところが難点でしょうか。ハッとさせられるような独自の解釈もありません。しかし、この曲にスペクタクルの一点のみを求める人にとっては、これ以上の演奏は望めないかもしれません。1989年の優秀録音。

昔から名盤とされてきたもの(CD時代全盛期という意味ですが)の再発。値段が安い! 改めて聞きなおして思ったのですが、
まずシカゴ響のブラスセクションはやはり人間技ではない。同じ音量で聴き続けるのは耳が痛くて困難。
あと、細部にあちこち結構ミスがある。「火星」の中間部のTpのチョンボは有名。とにかく豪快でド派手な演奏。恒星の光を受けて輝く「陽」の部分を前面に、「陰」の部分はとりあえず後回し。
総じて宇宙の神秘も静寂もへったくれもない楽天的過ぎる演奏に聞こえる。
確かに凄演だけど、こればっかり聞いてるとお腹いっぱいでしょう。

レヴァインは好きだけど、この人はホルストとはあわんな。悪くないけど微妙。火星が
迫力あるだけに金星で眠くなるわ。
