　まだレコードの時代、耳の肥えていない私にとってカラヤンの演奏は、音符を追うだけの無味乾燥なものにしか聞こえませんでした。感情的な抑揚のあるフルトヴェングラーやバーンスタインが好みでした。また、カラヤンはいわゆる「お金に汚い」などと言う、自分で確かめたわけでもない噂を信じ、なおイメージが悪かったのですが、この交響曲第３番を何を思ったのか購入してしまいました。
　聞いてみると、感情をできるだけ排し、美しい音を淡々とスピーディーに奏でる演奏が今の私には何と素晴しく聞こえることか。カラヤンという指揮者がなぜ「帝王」とよばれるようになったのか、その一端をいまさらながら垣間見た気がします。

速めのテンポだが、曲そのものの本質をしっかりとつかんでいる。
カラヤンらしく、アダージョは美しく荘厳に、フィナーレは快速に！
序曲ともに聴いてて気持ちの良い名演。

　カラヤン指揮の演奏の特徴、それは万人が認めるところの「流麗さ」。
　まるでオーケストラが一つの大きな大きな生き物のように挙動し、その皮膚は輝き、その筋肉はあくまでもしなやかに躍動する。贅肉のないアスリートのように。また、決して不自然にならないその語り口は音楽を至純な息吹で蘇らせる。彼はオレンジ色に燃え立つオーラを発するかのようにオーケストラを鳴らして、この変ホ長調交響曲”英雄”を颯爽と描いてみせた。カラヤン黄金期の７０年代の当録音は、きらめく輝かしさと勢いという点で他の年代のものより、私は好きだ。（一方で、このジャケットデザインが好きというのもある･･･）
