先日亡くなったイギリス近代音楽の重鎮、マルコム・アーノルド（Sir Malcolm Arnold 1921 - 2006）の作品がDECCAからシリーズでリリースされた。DECCAらしい企画力が発揮されたのを久々に感じさせるものである。当番はイギリス音楽のスペシャリスト、ヴァーノン・ハンドリーによって録音された交響曲全集である。第1番から第9番までの9曲と、弦楽のための交響曲、金管楽器のための交響曲を合わせた全11曲が5枚のCDに収録されている。フィリップ・ジョーンズ・ブラス・アンサンブルとの金管楽器のための交響曲のみが1979年の録音だが、他は90年代の録音で、音質もとてもいい。ちなみにオーケストラはロイヤル・リヴァプールフィルが第3番と第4番、ボーンマス交響楽団が第9番、弦楽のための交響曲がBBCコンサート管弦楽団、他はロイヤルフィルである。

アーノルドは映画「戦場にかける橋」などの音楽で有名だが、たいへんヴァイタリティあふれる活動を行った作曲家であり、交響曲も重要だ。中でも、一般的に指摘されるように第2、第4、第5の3つの交響曲は代表作といってさしつかえないだろう。アーノルドの作風は独特で、特にブラスセクションに重きのあるオーケストレーションが特徴的だ。スネアドラムやチェレスタの活躍も面白い。その一方でマーラーやショスターコヴィチといった偉大なシンフォニストの影響も垣間見られる。第2交響曲は中にあって温厚な作品で、アーノルドの「田園交響曲」と呼ぶにふさわしい。柔和なメロディライン自体が魅力的だ。第4交響曲の終楽章はフーガから始まるが、やがてアーノルド特有の軽音楽的な洒脱を見せてマーチに至る。このあたりもこの作曲家の醍醐味だろうか。傑作の名高い第5交響曲の第2楽章の耽美的な美しさはこのアルバムの白眉とも言える箇所だ。第6以降はショスタコーヴィチの影響が感じられるようになり、音楽も緊迫感を漂わせる。全般に、映画音楽的な経過句がずっと続くような箇所も多いが、そのような箇所も雰囲気として楽しむことはできるし、“アーノルド節”とでも言えるマーチや打楽器と金管楽器のリズム運動は軽快であったり、重厚であったりして楽しめる。ハンドリーの棒さばきによって、楽器のバランスが十分に考慮されているため、音の濁りがなく、音色自体も鮮やかに収録されている。
