作風は前作の「LEVIATHAN」の延長線上にあると考えていいと思います。
が、中身は前作以上に濃いです。いや、素晴らしい！ビックリしました。
「LEVIATHAN」を気に入られた方なら、この作品も絶対ハマりますよ。

前作より、プログレッシヴ度は上がり音数もかなり増えています。
迷宮に迷い込んだような独特の曲展開は複雑さを増し、聴く側に
挑戦状を叩きつけてきたといった具合で、非常に面白いです。
前作と違うのは、多少歌う（メロディーが乗る）ようになったことが挙げられます。
なので、人によっては「BLOOD MOUNTAIN」の方が聴き易いかもしれません。

決してストレートな音楽では無いので聴く人を選んでしまうかもしれませんが
一度ハマると、何度と無く手が伸びてしまう不思議な魅力（魔力かな？）を持ったアルバムです。

あと、普通へヴィロックというと２バスでドコドコ言わせてナンボの世界にありながら
このバンドのDrは１バス。Drのブラン・デイラーのテクニックは一聴の価値有りです。
ロールを多用するスタイルで、もう何をやってるんだか解らないくらい叩いてます。
とにかく凄まじいテクニックの持ち主です。２バスが、デイヴ・ロンバードなら
１バスはブラン・デイラー！そう言い切ってもいいくらいです。

私は昨年の『SLAYER&MASTODON』の新木場のライヴに行きましたが、そのときは音質が悪く
少し残念な結果でしたが、それでも彼らの実力を垣間見ることは出来ました。
MASTODONは素晴らしき”激音芸術家集団”だと思います。

次はどんな挑戦状を叩きつけてくれるのでしょうか？
非常に楽しみなバンドです。

器楽アンサンブルのアイデアの豊富さ、カッコ良さは神懸かり的だ。最近は変則リズムを臆せず「曲の加速装置」として上手く使えるバンドが多く出てきて嬉しい限りだ（The Dillinger Escape Planしかり、Sikthしかり、The Mars Voltaしかり）が、このバンドにもそういうセンスがある。メロディックな部分も同様の発想。結果、音像はモダンなラウド・ロック的だが根底に７０年代ロックに通ずる「何でもあり」の表現衝動が感じられるから素晴らしい。ヴォーカルにより個性というか凄味が増せば超・超一流だが．．．とも思うが、今でも悪くはない。いずれにせよ、オヤジから若人まで、聴いてよし、暴れてよしの傑作。特に前半部分、血が沸騰するぜ！

ニュースクールとオールドスクールの離合集散ということを、強烈に意識させられることが、最近よくある。Ａ７Ｘ、コヒカン、トリヴィアム等もそうだったが、このマストドンについては、その形が、更に押し進められたとの印象だ。システム、デフトーンズ、スリップノットといったニュースクールメタルの音楽形態（ハードコア路線、ヘヴィーグルーヴ、ローファイ感）と、ジューダス、メイデンらオールドのそれ（各インストゥルメンツのアンサンブル重視、所謂様式美など）とが渾然一体となり、ニューでもオールドでもない、全く別スタイルの、しかし、紛れも無い『ヘヴィメタル』『ヘヴィロック』を表現しきっている。時代は着実に変化し続けている、ロックってほんとうに面白い、そんなことを強く考えさせられた作品となった。メタルとパンクが対立項でなくなった９０年代から、更に進んでこの００年代、ニュースクールとオールドスクールも、もはや対立項ではなくなったということなんだろう。
