パワーステーションのボーカルとしてアメリカでブレイク、その後アルバム『リップタイド』からの「恋におぼれて」で全米一位を獲得した彼が、『リップタイド』の次に発表したアルバム。ここからは１曲目が全米でトップ５入り、５曲目もトップ４０入りするがアルバムの核となっているのはむしろUKでトップ１０入りした７曲目だろう。それ以外では３曲目と１０曲目も一応シングルカットされた（ヒットはしなかったが）。

ただ、アルバム自体は『リップタイド』と比較するとやや散漫な印象。この人の好きな様々な要素（ヘビメタ、ファンク、ボサノバ、レゲエ、アフリカ音楽からヨーデルまで）をゴッタ煮にしたようなサウンドは、一見似たようなことをやっているSTINGの音楽とは大違い。「洗練された」とか「ハイブリッド」とかいう形容がおよそ似つかわしくないそのアプローチは、例えるならガンダムの頭にマジンガーZの胴体とエヴァンゲリオンの手足をくっつけたみたいな感じ。実際A面の流れは正にその結果の食い合わせの悪さが堪能できる。

しかしこの人の真骨頂はB面の６〜８曲目にこそある。「大人のラブソング」などと言うとひどく月並みなAORを想像してしまうが、ここでの歌い手の体温まで伝わってくるような歌唱は、全盛期のブライアン・フェリーやジョージ・マイケルにも引けを取らない。特に翳りを帯びたボサノバ調の８曲目が素晴らしい。いけないことと知りながら官能の波に身を委ねてしまう、みたいな感覚を非常にうまく表現している。

冷静に考えれば１０曲中３曲もカバーを収録（５・６・１０）しており、そのうち６以外は必ずしも出来がいいとは言えないことからして、結構締め切りに追われて作ったんじゃないかとも思う。でも、毎年クリスマスになるとこのアルバムの６・７曲目が聴きたくなるのも確か。ジャケ写のイメージもシンプルだがこれぞロバート・パーマーという感じ。全く、惜しい人を亡くしたもんだ。合掌。

この人はニューオーリンズの音楽に憧れている。だからいろんな音楽の要素がこのアルバムの中には詰め込まれている。そういう謎解きをしながら聴くのもいい。豊潤でソウルフルな音楽を志向していた時期の彼のダイナミックなアルバムの一つ。ハイパーアクティブなファンクサウンドがすばらしい。１０点中１０点。
