まだ新人だったライアン・オニールとアリ・マックグロウの純粋で一途の愛の物語に泣きました。アーサー・ヒーラー監督の愛をこのような形で映画に収めたことは絶賛に値する。それほど立て込んだストーリー展開ではない素朴性が、この時代の背景と自然に溶け込んでいるのが実に素敵でした。冬のボストンとニューヨークという都会で起きる愛の悲劇。富豪であるがゆえに、素朴な恋愛ができないというシナリオは、いいかえれば、お金でもっと良い女性と結婚できるということで、階級の違いを愛のアンチテーゼにするところは、今の世の中でも良くある話である。ただ、時代的には、ベトナム反戦運動のさなか、60年代のヤング・パワーの勢いが、若いふたりにこのような愛をもたらしたのではないでしょうか？

ちょっと気になったセリフの中で、オリヴァーがジェニーを助けたいがために担当医に「俺は富豪で金ならいくらでもある」と言ったシーンはどのように解釈していいのか迷いました。お金がいくらあっても不治の病を治すことが出来ないという、自分は無力であると実感したということかもしれない。ラストに二人の思い出の屋外アイススケート場で回想するシーンは、ただただ寂しさだけがいつまでも残りました。このような映画が何故今のハリウッドで作成できないのか不思議でたまりません。

最初に公開された時に「愛とは決して後悔しない事」というせりふ、はやりました。脚本と同時進行のエリック・シーガルの小説もベストセラー！すぐ買っちゃいました。フランシス・レイのサントラはアカデミー賞で大ヒット、「メロディーが少ないのは作曲じゃない」他の作曲家のやっかみが入った等エピソードに欠きません。

当時パナマウント映画は経営不振で、制作費も少なく、あけてみたら会社最大のヒットとなりました。

白血病というと、今ではベタな話ですが、当時は何も考えずただ涙を流しました。ライアン・オニールとアリ・マッグローは１夜ににして大スターに。
今や恋愛映画のバイブルですね

頭が冴えてるときは、可もなく不可もなくって感じ。ライアンオニール演ずる主人公が、「僕はお坊ちゃんじゃない」と言動で主張している様が、いかにもお坊ちゃん風で良い演出。

久しぶりに観て驚いたのは、アリ・マクグローが美しく見えた事。優しく、知的で、そしてなによりもライオンオニールに受容的である事が、印象的。
