　久々のロック復帰ということで、世界中のファンの期待と注目を一身に浴びて発売されたニューアルバムですが、ロッド十八番のパワフルでソウルフル、ブルージーなロックを期待すると少々肩透かしを食らうかもしれません。フォークっぽい曲も多かったりして、ソフト・ロック集という印象。曲のアレンジも原曲とあまり変わらないフツーな感じで、その辺も、ひねったプラスアルファを求める向きには物足りなく感じられるかも。あぁ、昔から何度も蒸し返されているお決まりの批判が聞こえてきそう...「商業主義で安易に稼ぐヤツ」。
　でも、ロック評論家もどきの小難しいリクツは置いといて、何気に聴いてみて下さい。結構いいです。楽しいです。このお気楽さ、ノーテンキさもまたロッドの持ち味。ロッド本人は、ソウル・カバー集を作りたかったらしいけど、J-レコードの社長にそれじゃ売れないからロック懐メロ集にしろ、と言われて作ったのがこのアルバムだそうです。「売れなくでもいいから、好きにやらして下さい！」と言わないところがロッドらしいぞ。まあ、本人もそれなら、と、肩慣らしがてら軽い気持ちで作ったのでしょう。肩の力を抜いて楽しく歌っている雰囲気が伝わってきて、快く聴けます。しばらくの間は、私のイージーリスニングBGMとして重宝に活躍してくれそうです。
　次のソウル・カバー集か、オリジナル作品集に期待をつなげつつ、ということでオマケで星４つにしました。

もうみんな覚えていないかもしれませんが、その昔（調べたら1993年でした）同じような企画がありました。「リードボーカリスト」というアルバムです。
これはロックのカバーアルバムとして録音が開始されたのだけれど、途中でアンプラグドライブの話が舞い込んだためリハーサルもかねて半分がセルフカバーになった中途半端なアルバムでした。
そのときはスティービーニックスの「Stand Back」ストーンズの「Ruby Tuesday」トムウエイツの「Tom Traubert's Blues」なんかが収録されていて、私は面白いと思いました。セルフカバーにしないで当初の企画のまま完成して欲しかったと嘆いたものです。
今回のアルバムはそのときの悔しさ（すっかり忘れていましたが）を取り返してくれたようで、個人的にとてもうれしいです。
内容もロッドらしい渋目の選曲で聴かせてくれます。ファンの贔屓目で星☆５。

ロッドが、ここ数年のR&B〜ジャズ・スタンダード路線からロックに回帰した一枚になります。
アメリカン・グレイト・ソングブックは数えてみれば４枚も出たんですね。
念願のグラミーも獲ったし、アルバムセールスも好調だったようです。
昨年の雑誌インタビューで本人はこのシリーズは４枚で終わりにする、とは言ってましたが
その後どうする？と思ってみれば、意外に早くロック畑に戻って来た形。
ただ、やっぱり、カバー・アルバム。
おそらく９７年ごろに出した「ウー・ラ・ラ〜ザ・ニュー・ボーイズ」以来のカバー主体のロック作品と思いますが、
ロッドも還暦を過ぎ、声量が落ちても、シャウトが少なくても（インナーの写真はなかなか淋しい）、
あのハイトーン・ハスキーは健在で、その雰囲気がこうして新しく届くことが、ファンにとっては何よりのことなんです。

ただ残念なのは、昔のロッドは自前のバンドみたいなのがあって、他の曲のカバーをやる時であっても
何か必ずひとひねりして原曲と違ったことをしてやろう、というのがあったのですが、
セッションマンによる、すべて同じような出来合いのバンド・サウンドになってしまってるなあ、と。
ただ、そういう試聴の感想はあっても、「雨を見たかい（CCR）」「我が愛の至上（イーグルス）」
「イフ・ナット・フォー・ユー（ジョージ・ハリスン）」といった曲がはいってるので、やっぱり買いました。
そして、ぼくらの年代で嬉しいのは「ミッシング・ユー（ジョン・ウェイト）」！
