実は順番が逆で、
KASABIANをはじめに知ったのが
この2ndで、そのｴｽﾆｯｸな音感に焦って1stを
買い足した。
結論として両方良かった。
お金のある人は両方買った方が良い。
でも予算の無い人には、無条件この2枚目を推薦する。

ｵｰﾌﾟﾆﾝｸﾞの「Empire」、「Shoot The Runner」とﾀﾞｰｸﾋﾞｰﾄ
でありながら口ずさみ易い曲が続き、「British Legion」は
ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑに変化をつける為に欲しい一曲。とここまでは1stと
良い勝負であるが、最終曲「The Doberman」でKASABIANが
一段と成長したことがはっきり判明。

陰鬱なｷﾞﾀｰ・ｲﾝﾄﾛにｴﾚｸﾄﾛR&Bのﾎﾞｰｶﾙが入り
そこにﾒﾗﾝｺﾘｯｸなｺｰﾗｽが華を添えていく。
聴き終えて暫くは
「They never had no future/
they never had no past…」
このﾌｧﾙｾｯﾄ・ｺｰﾗｽがﾞいつまでも頭の中で繰り返される。

この曲の質の高さは、ある種ｽﾄｰﾝｽﾞの「Gimme Shelter」
に通じる黒魔術ｿﾝｸﾞ的力強さである。

確かにｸﾘｽﾄﾌｧｰ・ｶﾙﾛﾌというもう一人のｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰが脱退したことは
この先影響が無いとは言えないが、
ｾﾙｼﾞｵ作詞作曲のこの曲を聴くと
この世界観がよりKASABIANにはあっている気がする。

タイトルトラック"Empire"により幕開け。骨太なビートが縦のリズムを造形し、小気味よく刻まれ揺れるメロディと共に波状のグルーヴを形成していく。音の基本型は前作同様ながら、小規模な転調の導入、ストリングスやバックコーラスといった煌びやかなファクターを前面に押し出し鳴らされるサウンドからは、前作において『黒さ』を醸していた響きがかなり払拭されたように感じられる。

ためか、どうにも軽佻浮薄な感触が付き纏う。それが天然のモノではなく例え造られたモノであったとしても、ロックのダイナミズムや揺れ動くグルーヴの快を感じる瞬間が、前作では確かに其処此処に在った。しかし今作、とりわけ中盤から終盤にかけては、ただただメロディが流れ去り、何らの凄みを見せることなく終わってしまうようで、まるで刺激や面白みが感じられない。

土着の民族臭を感じさせる、煌びやかなストリングスが華麗に弾けるTr.4"Me Plus One"などは、ドヴォルザークのスラブ舞曲を思わせるところなどもあって面白いのだが。クラスの優等生になったというよりは、目立たぬ凡の子になってしまったような、多分に物足りなさを覚えたというのが正直な感想の一枚。

待ちに待った新譜ですが、一枚目とはかなり雰囲気が違います。
一枚目はデジタル色が強かったのですが、今作はドラムの打ち込みもしっかりして、
骨太になったというか、音に厚みが生まれています。前作より迫力があります。

それと同時にカサビアン独特の病み付き感は健在。
シングルのEmpireはもちろん、2曲目のShoot the Runner、8曲目のStuntmanなど、
かなり踊れるナンバーも相変わらず収録。ついリピートしちゃいます。
10曲目のBritish Legionでは今までにない顔も見せてます。UKロックに特徴的な
哀愁メロが印象的。
ラストのThe Dobermanは民族音楽のような強さと悲哀、けだるい雰囲気が入り混じっている。
こんな才能もあったんだ！と、彼らの成長を感じさせる一枚。

まぁ、二枚目出すまでに時間かかりすぎでしたけどね…
