　クリント・イーストウッドのウエスタンと言うと、やっぱり、セルジオ・レオーネに請われて主演しスターダムにのし上がる契機となった「荒野の用心棒」や「夕陽のガンマン」、あるいは、監督としても絶大なる名声を勝ち得た「許されざる者」や「ペイル・ライダー」を思い浮かべる人は多い。確かにどれも傑作だし、私も大好きな作品ばかりだが、忘れて欲しくないのがその２つの潮流の中間期に発表された「アウトロー」である。残念ながら世間的にはあまり知られていない今作だが、実は、イーストウッド映画のさまざまな魅力、エッセンスが凝縮された源泉とも言うべき快作なのだ。例えば、シャープな色調でコントラストが引き立つライティングは名パートナーのブルース・サーティスの手のよるものだし、イーストウッドの役柄は、南北戦争時に奴隷解放、産業隆盛を主張した近代的な北側ではなく、保守的な南部の農民で復讐に燃える無法者、即ち己の倫理と正義の下で生きる男だし、インディアンに移民、老人、少女に腹ペコの犬まで（笑）、いわいる社会的弱者、マイノリティへ向けられた優しい眼差しと共生が全編色濃く現れているし、まだあどけなさが残るソンドラ・ロックとの初共演作でもあるのだ。もちろん、激しいガン・ファイトとアクションもたっぷり盛り込まれ、ラストのＪ・ヴァーノンとの対峙はファンにとっては語り草と言っていい名場面、まだ観ていない人は是非、とお薦めしておきたい。

　アメリカ映画から正統派西部劇が消滅していく中、イーストウッドだけが細々と西部劇を作り続けてきたが、そんな彼のフィルモグラフィの中でこの「アウトロー」は評価が高い作品のひとつであろう。
　もちろんガンファイトもあるし、インディアンの酋長やジョン・バーノンと対峙する場面の見事な演出もいいが、一種のロードムービーとしてみても秀作で、孤独なヒーローが追われて逃げる道中で仲間たちが増えていき前半のハードさが消えて何故か心暖まる雰囲気になってくる。そして最後には擬似家族のようになってイーストウッドが銃を捨てるという終わり方は「許されざる者」のラストのクレジット（マニーが商売人として成功したことを告げる）と見事にリンクしているように思える。
　のちにイーストウッド映画の癌となるソンドラ・ロックもこの作品に限り魅力的。
